I have pulled the seats out of the coupe more times than I can count. Each and every time I re-install the the stupid shim under the rails. How many do this? What is the shims purpose in life? Should I just toss them?

The shims are there to protect the carpet, plus they allow you to tighten the seat nuts without pulling the seat track down into the carpet. The curved part goes down and follows the curvature of the floor pan.

Correct.

If the carpet protectors frustrate you perhaps you could get some large diameter 5/16" fender washers and install one on each seat mounting stud. After putting the washer on each stud use a "push nut" to keep it there the next time you remove the seat.

You could send them to me..

I think I have a couple of those around here in a box somewhere. I never dug far enough to realize that’s what they’re are used for! Thanks for the lesson.

I was basically wondering how many still install them. I can imagine that a large percentage of Mustangs no longer have them installed; lost, forgotten or tossed.
John, there are 8 of them, 4 for each seat so I hope you have more than a couple.

I wouldn’t use the thin fender washer, bends too easy.
I know you can get washers that are thicker so they don’t bend as easy.
In neighborhood of 1/8” to 1/4” thick.
I like the idea of the zip nut...or whatever they are called.
I reinstalled mine Gary to protect the carpet.

I didnt use them with my new TMI seats. I hope my car will be alright with them in the cupboard.

I used them. I apply the OEM investment theory here. If Ford invested whatever they did to figure they were needed and then make them...well, there was at least reasonable thought that went into them. Who am I to question that.

I just installed new carpet and due to the lack any carpet hold down mounts anywhere; I convinced myself that the engineers used these clips to keep the rug from sliding around.
Offline
Agree w/BB, I painted and re-installed these shims on my ride.

I did put them back in as I always have. As BB1 mentioned, the factory thought they were needed.
Cab4work67, me thinks your seats will fall out. Drive cautiously.

The first time you slide the seat back and the track grabs one of the loops in the carpet and pulls out a runner you'll know why Ford put them there.

I always hated the stock loop carpets, damn stuff will snag and run just by looking cross eyed at it.
I replaced mine with cut pile carpet.

John,
When I was putting the 67 back together after paint I mentioned to Carolyn that if I was on the assembly line at Ford putting these cars together that I wanted to be the lug nut installer. The interior was the biggest pain in the arse work one can do on these cars.
Your new engine is looking sweet. 429 cubes is gonna be fun to drive.

I don't think I even have these in my car... I have had the seats in and out multiples times and just cannot picture them...
REMEMBER!!! When posting a question about your Mustang or other Ford on this forum, BE SURE to tell us what it is, what year, engine, etc so we have enough information to go on. |
