FYI Ford, Classic Mustang Tech Discussion » Shackles destroyed the frame rails? » 4/01/2021 9:28 PM |
Hi guys, I’m still slowly rebuilding my project. not a lot of original sheet metal left on it but I’m getting close to the end of the nightmare
I have a weird thing going on with the suspension
the shackles have damaged the frame rails… I’m going to patch and replace everything but I’m wondering how this happened and if this is really normal. What d’you guys think?

Dude, was my worse day in the US!
Even worse, when that happened I had not found my actual job in Dallas yet and I had already booked a container to ship the coupe to France!!!
3 years of effort (and a few nightmares/adventures) daily driving this project making it bad -oh no I used a word I shouldn't have-, that was heartbreaking...
but planets finally decided to align better, I found great job, an opportunity to stay in this great country and AAA paid a good part of the FB and labor so that my beloved pony will come back better than ever!
:-D
Just a matter of time. The coupe was my learning experience before the real deal.

Good !
(As I have 2 pairs of clear fogs that’s very good news)
So, for led?
Simple led bulbs or rectangular plate with led lights everywhere ?
FYI Ford, Classic Mustang Tech Discussion » Back up lights or not? » 10/03/2018 6:18 PM |
True.
Now that I’m paying attention it’s even pretty rare to see any early stang without them.
But I bought my car as a puzzle and rear valance was missing.
It’s an April 65 real GT, A code, standard interior, no AC.
As it’s one of the very first GT, I would like it to look as close as factory as possible...
(even if I’m going Caspian instead of Rangoon LOL)
Hard decision !
FYI Ford, Classic Mustang Tech Discussion » Back up lights or not? » 10/02/2018 10:59 AM |
So when you say LED, you’re talking about the big LED board C5ZZ-LED ?
Or about the LED bulbs SD-1157-RFB-RD?
Is that the way to go?
Another question for specialists:
About Fog lights... why are there some white ones and some amber ones?
What’s the difference?
What’s factory installed on an early GT?
FYI Ford, Classic Mustang Tech Discussion » Back up lights or not? » 9/30/2018 10:50 PM |
Considering I got rearended by night with my coupe... definitely I think I’ll go for LED in the tail lights.
LED bulbs?
I’ve seen that they offer them in white or in red... what’s the way to go?
I read somewhere about blinker issues, what about it?

Do you have another ignition coil that you could try?
I would start by simple...
What ignition system do you have ?
Could be capacitor also.

Thanks a lot!
So I will not install backup lights.
For Rally Pac, when I’ll be ready to spend the cash...
I will then go for high profile 6000 as my car is an A code.
Looks like only Scott Drake makes one that can be compatible with my MSD 6AL...
all black or chrome rings around the gauges?
And I will use sand paper to remove the chrome letters « RallyPac » gently.
FYI Ford, Classic Mustang Tech Discussion » Back up lights or not? » 9/24/2018 9:10 PM |
I had a 66 coupe so I have some lights available...
But as I got rearended my valance is dead.
Now that I’m rebuilding a 65, I don’t know what valance to buy.
If my April 65 FB GT is not supposed to have them I will not add them. I’d rather hide something invisible underneath as a backup help... but then I need à valance with just 2 holes for the trumpets, not 4 holes.
So you guys confirm that my car should not have these lights?
FYI Ford, Classic Mustang Tech Discussion » Back up lights or not? » 9/24/2018 4:39 PM |
In Mustang 360 I was reading an article spotting differences between a 65 and a 66...
I thought I knew all that.
But no!
Now I’m confused about back up lights on my ongoing project of April 65 FB GT(A).
Should I have them or not???
And if one day I finally buy a Rally pack, was the « low profile » already available in April 65 when the1st 5 cluster dash came out? And V8 should be 8000rpm right?

That’s the beginning !
We’re replacing all trunk floor. Keeping the shock mount structure and cutting just after.
Than the quarters will follow.
I must admit than I had not planned to go that far when I bought it!
But you gotta do what you gotta do...

My car looks almost like a pickup truck or a hatch back...
But not so much like a car...

I’m also having same problem.
For metal parts, yes, I plan on using basic spray paint.
For the fiber parts, I was told to use SEM vinyl primer and paint. I have not done it yet.
FYI Ford, Classic Mustang Tech Discussion » AFR gauge » 9/20/2018 8:50 AM |
Of course, there’s always a guy to tell you the opposite : this time it’s me :-D
I use an Autometer needle gauge.
I think it is very useful.
It allows me to make sure my idle is set as I like it,
It allows me to check that everything is ok when I drive at steady speed on the highway...
Of course if you’re doing 1/4 mile race you can’t keep your eyes on it, but on the highway it’s a good security check, I look at it the same way I keep an eye on my water temp.
If you know how to read it, I recommend it.

Stainless questions will probably come after paint!
For stainless I didn’t have the long thin stainless trim but I found it new (not sure how well it will go)
I have bought the foam
I have the original thicker trim
I bought new weatherstripping
I still need to buy the drip rail trim.
But for the moment my problem is onto sheet metal.
I found new drip rails in weld through primer.
We’re trying to remove the existing.
My problem concerns a flat metal part where the trim screws into.

Thank you so much for your picture!
I read the topic on radiators, I understand that there are 2 sizes bigger than the 17 (keeping both hoses on the RH)
A 21ish that can fit with just a bit of trimming of the battery tray and that doesn’t require to relocate the AC lines.
And a 24ish that requires a little bit more custom work.
Now I need to go play with my measuring tape under the hood... I’ll send pictures in the process.
FYI Ford, Classic Mustang Tech Discussion » Drip rails replace questions » 9/18/2018 6:53 PM |
Damn,
What’s the process for replacing drip rails?
(Fastback 65)
I thought it was just a straight forward drill the welds, remove old metal, position new metal, spotweld, seamseal, done!
Apparently not that simple.
In the upper part there’s an extra piece of sheet metal, like flat 28x2 with a 90’ bend all the way...
Can I buy this part somewhere?
What’s the trick?
FYI Ford, Classic Mustang Tech Discussion » Rack & pinion on a 65 » 9/16/2018 7:24 PM |
Shelby drop is a MUST DO, whatever your driving style or your use.
3 degree caster is great, otherwise your steering wheel doesn’t come back. I chose GlobalWest upper control arms with 3 degrees caster built in to achieve that easily. Because playing with shims doesn’t allow you to go that far. With power steering between 3 and 4 is even better.
0 camber doesn’t work bad as far as I tried
1/8 total toe, I think that’s what Shelby recommended.
So, for my little pony, I guess I’m gonna follow your advice : use the Borgeson set up that I had on the coupe and try to lower the pressure of my Sag pump. I’ll see how it goes.
Btw, talking steering, I need a GT woodgrain steering wheel.
Where should I buy it from? I heard that Scott Drake one was not that great. What about NPD?

Thanks a lot for your warm welcome!
I have been looking forward finding a group of happy people to share with!
I fell in love with every single one of your cars... and I have so many new questions.
I noticed that 1/2 of you are using a large radiator, probably 21x17.
Should I do that too? With AC, even with a champion 4 row my needle climbs...
What are you guys using?
I’m so jealous of aluminum version of mag 500 I saw on a moss green coupe... that’s what I should have bought instead of my heavy chromed version.
A 427 in a 65??? Really??? incredible!
Who makes elbow cushions that fits over a central console? I want one!
I have not seen any cars with Shelby style traction bars... I was surprised because I greatly appreciated that on my coupe, giving me more stability at higher speed.
I guess I’m doing something wrong.
I wish I would have seen a Caspian blue, that’s the color I chose for my fb but I have never seen one in real...
:-)

No Shims 1350PSI
1 Shim 1200PSI
2 Shims 1100PSI
3 Shims 1000PSI
4 Shims 850PSI
5 Shims 700PSI
Love you guys! Finally a REAL forum!!!
So, what pressure works best ?
I do feel an excessive steering assistance but there is more:
My Borgeson System “whistles” when I’m not moving, at idle, wheels straight and I don’t have my hands on the steering wheel.
Noise goes away as soon as I apply a bit of pressure on the steering wheel.
The whistle sound is kind of what you hear on any car when you keep forcing on the steering wheel in a locked right of left position.
When I told Borgeson they replied that they had never heard anything like that... and advised to adjust the box set screw (which had absolutely no effect).
I’m French, I drive my car the hard way.
FYI Ford, Classic Mustang Tech Discussion » Rack & pinion on a 65 » 9/14/2018 4:01 PM |
Ouch...
Talking fluid, what is the Borgeson box supposed to deal with?
I’ve been feeding it with basic PS fluid from Prestone, cheap Autozone stuff!
I don’t care either about the brand as long as it’s reliable, maintainable and doing the job.
But if Sag 1500psi is too high, Ford 1100psi might be better no?
What is it that Borgeson sells to fix the issue?
What about a bigger pulley?

When is it best for me to come?
Where is it?
