Re: Does anyone have 4 point or 6 point roll bar in their car??

My 66 convertible had a 4-point roll bar in it when I bought it.  It was a major pain to get into the rear seat.  I'm pretty sure that I still have it somewhere - I think in the rafters in the detached garage.  If you want it and can come and get it from me in South Dakota, PM me and I'll confirm that I still have it.

Re: Does anyone have 4 point or 6 point roll bar in their car??

I installed a six point pro street style roll bar.  I will never allow anyone to ride in the back because of the bars going over head and the cross bar for the main hoop.  With the pro street style bar I can get in and out of the car with ease because the door bars are bent out of the way and the rear bars follow the roof and back window lines so it doesn’t go through the rear seat.

Re: Does anyone have 4 point or 6 point roll bar in their car??

Why do you want a roll bar? I installed one cuz I thought they looked cool, which is the most important criteria, right? I started with making just a four point, but ended up with more. Not sure if I'd ever do it again because they really limit accessibility.

Whoever installed mine (the car came with it) hacked up the rear interior pieces to get the rear section attached and also had to cut the carpet to get the front bars attached to the car floor.  The front vertical section of the roll bar rubbed on the front seats and that upholstery was damaged too.  I can't say it's a desirable thing to do just for "looks cool" purposes.  I can say that it cost me a lot of time to fix the rear panels that had been hacked and $$$ to get the seat upholstery properly fixed.

Still, if you want to come and get it, it's yours.  I know where it is and will be happy to dig it out for you.

Don’t tempt me John!

Where did the rear legs attach?

Just wondering.

It's been over 30 years but I seem to recall that they attached to the rear wheel wells, high on either side of the rear seat.

Thanks John.

Re: Does anyone have 4 point or 6 point roll bar in their car??

Just remember to be careful where you and your passenger are in relation to the bars. Aftermarket rollbars, roll cages are mainly designed with the driver wearing a helmet. Folks have died in accidents on the street because their head hit the bar. And no, rollbar padding is not good enough to absorb impact in a collision.

Just something to keep in mind, I ended up using a containment seat in my red truck after the cage went in to protect my head when not wearing a helmet. But that is a seriously impractical option for a regular street car.

Cobranda sells what's normally considered to very good Shelby reproduction stuff.  They state that the roll bar is "decorative" and not to be considered protection if you roll the car.

If you don't want to spend a lot you could make one out of PVC and paint it black.  That alternative would at least allow you to configure it so it's a minimal nuisance.

EDIT TO ADD:  If you know someone local who races, maybe they can steer you to someone who makes the roll bars and can help you out getting what you want made.

Look into the Rhodes kits.  I bought a cheap tubing notcher from Harbor Freight.  The kit would give you some flexibility as to how you want it installed.  Look at other kits that are sold too.  I think Autopower may sell a nice four point.

"I knew a guy" that did this^^^
He built the PVC cage and put the black foam insulation on it with plastic tie wraps......Never knew the difference! (until he told me)
He SAID he actually raced with this set-up and got it through "tech" !
He claimed it saved him several hundred pounds of weight !!! (no kidd'in !)

So no interior trim, no back seat, no passenger front seat?  If this is your path the roll bar would not be totally inconvenient as mine was.

If you're really serious about the "look" why "cheap out"?  Do it right - go for the good reproduction Branda sells.

Re: Does anyone have 4 point or 6 point roll bar in their car??

Total control has some nice options - a little more money but since they are made to fit you'll save hours on labor.

I bought a pre-bent package from Autoweld Chassis - It was cut to fit but the main bar and the side bars were properly bent.  Their website is still a little tough to navigate and a phone call may be easier.  My car was on a rotisserie with no interior so I had ro/nom to test fit.  If you are going to install a roll bar, do it right or don't bother.  Something non-functional for a "look" seems like a waste of time/effort/money.  Send a message if you want me to email pictures of the install.

Not trying to be a jerk (but probably succeeding wildly), but if you get one, my experience suggests that after you've lived with it for a few dozen drives you'll wish you didn't have it and remove it.  It's a pain to live with - really.  And you will have to hack up your interior to install it (and figure out how to fix the hacked up stuff after you've removed the roll bar).

Of course, it's your car and you do you :-)
