Swap Meet » Wanted 65 or 66 stock 5 lug rear end » 12/27/2024 9:12 PM |
I see you’re looking for a 65, 66. I have a 70 five stud for a 250 six cylinder with no brakes. I don’t know what the difference is but you can have it if you want to come to Dallas and pick it up. I’m pretty sure it is slap worn out cause it’s making noise like pinion gears. It has 150,000 miles on it.
FYI Ford, Classic Mustang Tech Discussion » Clutch Out » 12/05/2024 10:05 PM |
My clutch went out today on the Mustang. I put in a cheap one initially, but thinking it would last a lot longer than it did. Anyone have any suggestions as to which one to get. It's not a drag car, just a cruiser with a powerful engine. I dont think I need a $1000.00 clutch. TIA

In 1969 I had the oldest car in school. I had spent the summer rebuilding it up from a body off frame project. Including painting it in and out with new upholstery and top. Overhauling the engine and front suspension. The day of the first start of the engine a friend and I took off for Nevis, MN on the 8th Crow Wing Lake from Tucson AZ on the first of August. Before we got out of town the engine quit because a nut fell off the coil. Stripping the wire and wrapping it around the coil lug, we were on the road again. Two weeks later driving back home. A week after that I turned around and drove to Milwaukee WI non stop, 32 hours. On that trip I ran out of gas outside of Deming NM on the way to Hatch at around 2 in the morning. There were no gas stations open at that time in the morning. I flagged down a car and it turned out to be a high school friend driving that car. After catching up and gas I was back on the road. It was a 55 T-Bird.
On the trip home from the Vandailia bash the roll pin on the distributor gear broke. The group with us stopped and we were back on the road in no time. Today I was driving the 70 Mustang convert to the airport and turned unto the access road to the airport. As I accelerated down the road and shifted into 4th, the clutch slipped big time. I went back through the rest of them, it's shot. It would have happened on this bash trip had we been able to go. We would have had to join Vicky and Don on the trailer back home. There is no way to know when when a break down is going to happen. Weather it is human error or defective parts. Most people that stop are very friendly and helpful. The help on the road is an amazing God send.

Well, according to Gargle Mops, total mileage from Atlantic Mine to Marysvill, Ks (Allan' place) to Pine Junction, CO (RV6's Place) to Montrose, CO (my place) to Bako (the bash) to Houston,TX (Glen and Steve and Coupe Daddy's Place. And Dans brother, I think) and then back to Atlantic Mine, MI is a total of over 5600 miles. Add in all the general running around everywhere (I know he did around 300 at the bash, I know I did) and it ain't hard to see just short of 6400 miles.
Hell of a cruise, LT. Proud of you and your very fine '65. Everyone should strive to make their classic drive as sweet at your car. Mine is decent but I will work hard to make it as fine as yours.
A feat to be proud of and a feat to be proud to go for. Way to go Lt. Dan!

Thanks the prayers. The Drs and Nurses say that Karens dad is recovering well and will be coming home soon. Karen and I will need to go to rehab to learn how to help him with some of his rehab. They will also come to do home care as well.
Have a great bash wish we were going. We are canceling our reservations but not sure about Springhill Suites at this time.

Karens dad had a stroke Saturday night and has been in intensive care until last night. They moved him to a room and are doing more tests on him. So far we dont have any definitive answers. Today he failed his swallowing test which means we can’t move him to rehab. We’ll need to find him a place to sleep but dont know where that will be yet. Karen is under a bit of stress of course. We both have been looking forward to this trip and still hope to go. I think ya’ll should know lest we get caught up in what ever and not show up. Please pray for her dad and the decisions we need to make and that we will get to.

I didn`t expect to get wrapped up in the Bash Thrash this year. It`s been running real good. I shouldn’t have done a walk around. Two of the rear axel seals were leaking and I dont have the time to look at. The shop found all the bearings in the differential burning up. So Im glad they caught it. It’s supposed to be finished today.

The oil pressure, manifold pressure, and fuel pressure sensors were originally around $25. each. The diaphragms started to wear out in them and an Airwortiness Directive was issued to replace them with $285. each sensors.
Aircraft fuel injection is pretty much the same as a pressure carburetor with the addition of a spider to run the fuel to each cylinders intake port.

I’ve “restored” a couple of batteries back in my old days. It was just a wash out of the deteriorated material and add new acid after inspecting the plates to make sure they were still standing up straight.
I don’t know about the lead chemistry just what I’ve seen and heard from the manufacturers. The license renewal seminar talked about the Concord brand. Of course they are the best out there according to themselves. All the battery cases are heavier than automotive and each cell has their own cap that is designed for aerobatics and rough air to keep the acid in the battery. The battery is then placed in an enclosed box designed to capture any escaped acid and then vented overboard with air in and air out tubes. Acid comes with a new battery in a separate container that needs to be added to the battery when put into service. It is a MIL spec acid so with that I would assume the lead plates are a MIL spec as well. The price of them has more than doubled since Covid.

Interesting that an AGM in an airplane doesn’t last as long as a “wet” battery but I'm still running my original AGM in my 2019 truck. The “book” says it should last two more years than the wet battery

I put an EarthX battery in the Cub and it works great. It is a lithium battery that has been approved for general aviation and experimental aircraft as well. They have come a long ways in a very few years. It uses the aircraft generator to charge it. It does need a special bench charger. I don’t have one. You can use a regular charger on it but you need to watch it and not let it get hot.
FYI Ford, Classic Mustang Tech Discussion » Am I the only kid who remembers this liquid far ?!! » 9/02/2024 4:54 PM |
We never had that stuff in our cabinet when I grew up but our friends and neighbors did. If we got scratched or worse we’d go home and put Bactine on it. Sissies maybe, but they wouldn’t “fly” their bike over our jump either.

I put a certified Earth X battery in the Cub. For such a tiny and light battery it works really good. Sins the engine faster too. A friend also put one in his plane. There is no reason to not put one in a car given the price of a new automobile battery. They last about twice longer too.

Mine did get away, I gave it away. I actually had two of them. I bought for $500 each in 1969 about 3 months apart. The first one was a bondo bucket that didn’t run and the other one was a body only, cut up to be a drag racer. I took all parts off the bucket and put them on the racer including the body parts that I needed and overhauled the engine. I drove it to Mich, Minn, & Wisconsin from Az three times. And all over AZ. In 74 my wife was in a fender bender accident. I couldn’t find a good replacement fender so it sat in the garage for over a year until a friend came to visit and spied it in the garage. After a short negotiation I traded both 55 T-Birds for his six month old Pinto. About 3 months later my uncle sold his 55 Bird for $32K. Then about a year later we went to the guys house that had my T Birds and the driver was sitting out in his empty lot painted in a rough primer with the top down. Very little of the car had been masked off and overspray was all over the interior. The fender was fixed however most excellently. My Mustang is my current replacement vehicle.
The next car was a 68 KR convertible that was for sale across the street from a convertible car show that was going on. It was a beat up I car I thought someone had modified. At the time I had no clue what it was.

No, I removed the original 3 speed and installed a 94 T5 using a modified trans mount and an 85 T- bird driveshaft. I took the drive shaft in to have it balanced a they discarded the dampener that was on it and installed new u joints.

FOUND IT!!! Wasn’t me. I took the Mustang in to redo the exhaust system and he had to remove the drive shaft. The rear U joint had one cap that was nothing but powder. Glad thats over.

I’ve shears, scissors, die grinders bid and small, cutters, polishers and I thought everything in between, but I’ve never heard of a waver wheel. The Internet defines it as something for the lake.
FYI Ford, Classic Mustang Tech Discussion » Replacing the floor » 3/19/2024 7:12 PM |
I’ve had the car sitting around since 2004 and haven’t decided what I want to do with it except give it to one of the kids. Other than that I’ve wanted to fix it up. The AC system was disconnected at the heater and compressor. The drain at the bottom of the AC box was broken so the water from the AC and the heater core were leaking onto the floor for who knows how long. The rust covers all of the back seat foot well. The floor skin looks to be somewhere around .020. There is no other rust on the car except under the battery tray. I was going to let that go. The rust on the floor is flaky all over it. When I dig under the flakes it leaves a hole. For all these reasons I decided to change it. So I bought a 3/8 “diamond” spot weld cutter and It got through 1 and half spot welds. Not to impressed.
FYI Ford, Classic Mustang Tech Discussion » Replacing the floor » 3/17/2024 9:53 PM |
Thanks all or the recommendations. I’ve been welding since I was a kid. I learned on Oxy/Acetylene and have mostly worked with thin sheet metal. When heavy duty welding was needed I did ARC welding. I played with wire fed welding many years ago long enough to see how it worked. Some guy set it up for me so I’ll need to learn how to do that. I don't remember if it used gas or not but I did like it. I want to do the welding in my garage with gas because of the less potential for sparks.
