Hi everybody,

As Hakan mentioned, we live far away from the earthquake but are alerted that there might be some kind of a tsunami in the coming days/weeks. Hope that all that natural disasters are over for good and the people there can start to fix their wounds. The earthquake happened 04:17 in the morning and i am afraid that the dead count will very very high! Every city is sending heavy equipment and needs with the contribution of the citizins. Snow/rain and the cold makes everything worse then it already is.

Thanks for caring,

This engine came with a '63 Fairlane 2 door sedan car that was in parts. The owner put a 5.0 EFI in it and sold the engine to my neighbor to be used in his '64 Fairlane 4 door.

We decided to build this engine in a long time schedule while he was driving his '64 with my 200 cui inline 6 with a C4 auto tranny. But giving the reality that Turkey is coming to its economical end and the $$$$ skyrocketed in the last few years, we made a deal that he gets my 6 + C4 and i get the 221 with the Ford-O-Matic 2 speed.

So that means that i am stuck with this engine. BTW a Summit Racing 302 trades for araound $10000 where a monthly normal salary is around $270 !!!!

I have never seen this engine running and don't think that these heads are the stock ones (the engine is orange but the heads are black). Beside that, i am missing everything on the heads. no valves, no springs, no keepers, no rockers nothing just the bare 289 heads.

Other then that the engine is fairly complete and seems to be rebuild shortly before the car was disassembled.

I started collecting parts and this will take a while. Will do a stock rebuild and hope to get my hands on a car that this can go in. I gave my elder son a '87 Mustang convertible with a 5.0 HO and T5 in it which he still enjoys driving. Now i have to take care of my younger son and build him a car too so he leaves MY '63 Fairlane alone and i can drive it more!

Sorry, got a little long.

OK, I made a mistake with the engine ID. Looked up the numbers and the engine is a 221 V8 with '63 289 heads on. Not what i expected but thats what i have!!!

Anybody knows of a way to make this a driver.  Can't change it or buy another engine and have to work on That!

ordered a stock WP and a harmonic balancer with the outer ring but if it doesn't harm i am willing to use the stock balancer. Any ideas on that?

Here are the pics MS.

My bet goes to the idle mixture adjustment.
Or
When you start the engine and it runs 1100rpm, close the choke plate  slowly with your hand. If engine runs you have a vacuum leak somwhere.

My 2 cents

Hi everybody,

Pulled out my last Ford V8 engine to see what i need to rebuild it. It is a 1963 260 V8 out of a 63 Fairlane.

I looked up a water pump and a harmonic balancer.

1. There is a balancer on there and i tought it is ripped off but after checking the shop manual, i noticed that these early engines do not come with the outter ring seperated by the rubber from the balancer.

question: Should i leave it like this or upgrade to the newer style?

2. The water pump is gone and has to be replaced. The factory one doesn't have a steel backing plate but many people on the net change them to the newer style WITH backing plate.

and again, should i leave it stock or upgrade it to the newer style?

Any and all help is appreciated,

Mustsed

I came across alot of classics that had some sort of Skoda carbs on them to reduce gas consumption. The bigger the engine they were fitted to, the sooner they run out of throttle!

What's the point on driving a V8 Classic and making it a 4 cylinder power car????

Should buy a newer 4 banger instead and gain a few gpm from the aerodynamics too.

When I first got the car, i tried to decipher the VIN and noticed that there is no such VIN shown in the decoders. Later i found out that my Fairlane was an export model. As far as i could make out, the exports differ in this ways;

- Export brace stamped (likee Mustang one's)
- Bigger front swaybar
- 2 small reflectors beside the taillights (Germany, France and Turkey at least).
- Km/h speedometer
- 5 pax seatbelts (Germany, France and Turkey. Belgium and Netherlands had only front).
- Low comp. 170, 221 or 260 engines.

İf anybody knows more please share. The above list is personal research and might be wrong in some points.

Love that car but it has the worst front geaometry ever designed by ford!!!

Here are some pics of my setup. The wiper system is the Ford Truck intermittent type with a special switch, a controll box and a later wiper motor. The wiper motor is smaller but had to be clocked anyway.

Hope that helps,

I happen to drive a '63 Fairlane daily and had that problem too. Almost every mod on a 62-65 Fairlaine is a problem by its own.

My car has the Metro Geo/Suzuki swift brake booster & MC installed and even with them (small) the Wiper motor needed to be clocked away.  Can't recall the mod out of my head but wasn't that hard.

Can take pics if needed.

A spring has different tension during range of motion which might be complex to calculate or apply! The idea of changing the pedal ratio sounds better IMHO.

BTW Texas is right with the helper spring that acts as a return and helper spring. Stiffen that one might show some benefit to your problem too.

I live in one of the hottest places over here and make Phenolic spacers for carbed engines. The problem we had was, when the car is parked hot and you try to start it within 10 minutes, it hesitates to start but start immediatly when a Phenolic spacer is added. Aluminum spacers don't work here!

With a little effort, you can make PAR30/36 sealed bulb fit into the fog housing. These are sold in any watt range from 100 - 300 watts and also have 12v ones. Look into a pool market or stage lightning because that's where thay are used mostly. They come in spot/wide and ultra wide beams.

Put a pair into another brand car which had to pass a forrest every night and they were more then bright. DON'T touch them, very hot they are! Don't remember exactly what i did to put them in but it was an easy job for sure.

Hi,

I've never seen SEALED BEAM headlights lightning up anything but themself!  Al cars i own or have owned get the headlight assembly with a H4 bulb and relay upgrade because i drive them day and night!
Over here you can't pass the inspection if you have sealed beam headlights.

OK, just a fallower on this topik.

After the 4th seal replacement without luck, i removed the timing chain cover, cleaned it, bolted the wp to it and found a unvisible crack just behind the squirt. I looked with magnifying glasses before and nothing was visible. No time to order a new one so it was welded and the surface was trued. Will get to it in a few days and cross fingers that it will be done!

Thanks all for your suggestions,

A few years ago, i bought a '68 Mustang Borgeson steering box and it was delivered faulty. After a long debate (thanks this forum) we got a new valve head and changed it. It was clearly stated that the box works with the Fox mustang PS pump which i installed onto the 302 in the '68. The car was hard to steer even tought the PS pump was a brand new unit. After a few mails, Borgeson told us that the pump was not producing enough pressure and we should buy their Saginaw unit, which we did. Car is still running with that setup!

My '67 has the same setup and I am using a Cadillac Cetara PS pump rated to 110bar (1595psi) according to an online page.
I know for sure that a early ford, saginaw, fox and power pump will not work, those i tried before.
