You have to remove the axle bearings to install the MustangSteve brackets. That is because the brackets are designed to give a light bearing crush 360 degrees around the bearing. The ones that simply bolt on using the old bearing will have a bearing with partial compression around the perimeter. Made cheap and easy to install, not to be the best design.
The Mustangsteve stuff uses all Ford original parts on wear items so you can always find a replacement in twenty years.
If your desire is cheap, easy to install and a kit with all the junk parts you need, the MustangSteve stuff is probably not going to be your first choice. But, it will wind ip being your second, more permanent choice.
Ok Great Ty MS.....
So, all I get from this link is a bracket then, correct? : 11.65" 1994-04 Cobra Rear Brakes on your Classic Ford (Large Bearing) – MustangSteve
The photo I provided in my recent response, those are OEM ford Parts, can I use anything from there? As for the Bearing, I am purchasing a ORIGINAL Bearing Designed for the Factory Ford 8" Diff for the 60s, correct?

Steve provided the link you needed above. All of the information you need is found here:
All of the parts can be found at Rockauto.com or other site like Summit. I trust these over many Ebay sites.
If the instructions and parts list provided (which includes model years), contact the MustangSteve crew
So, to further clarify - order the bracket kit from MustangSteve.com, use the instructions to determine the parts you'll need, order the parts, and put it together.
OK, firstly I thank everyone who has taken the time to try and help/give insight........but I feel like im not much farther ahead.
Either I am Dense, or I'm missing something:
from the start I had expressed a want/need for clear parts list/references to specific items if Piecing Together, or if getting a kit, what I may Require to Procure outside of any kit.
What does the Listing Pasted here include for $300US? I did read the installation instructions, its unclear why I need to replace the Axel Bearing if its still good?
Should I just get a kit like this, or are they total trash?

Is this the link for the eBay seller of Cobra Calipers?
After 30min if searching I still don't know exactly what im looking for, there are hundreds of calipers and frankly I don't know the difference.
So if these are the correct Calipers (or I eventually find them), does the system used the Factory Cobra Rotors too?
What do I do for Branke Lines?
Parking Brake Cable?
And most importantly, the Bracket......which brackets mou ts to the Diff and how do I find it?

Tha ks MS and TKO, but this is part of my issue taking this route.
I don't have any part numbers or reference information for parts.
Essentially I wouldn't know which brackets to buy for even the COBRA setup.
Nor do I know which lines to get, bolts, rotors etc.
I've been scouring forums and websites and can't find anyone who has posted a solid list of parts/part numbers and/or links.
So I don't really care if it's Cobra or Versaillis or Crown Vic, I'm just looking for clear direction.
If I bought the Cobra Conversion brackets from MS website, I have no clue what else to buy.
The Right Stuff sells a bargain product but those calipers look chincy.

Hi all, want to get ready for a Spring Project ---- Its been a while since I had me a project and I miss it!
I am looking to do a Rear Disc Conversion on my Factory V8 Rear Diff, but I'd like to do it on a budget. That doesnt mean buying used parts, but Looking for info on what parts I can purchase at suppliers to put together a conversion, if possible.
Im assuming Id have to buy a Bracket(s) and that is encouraged, but as far as Calipers, Rotors and lines, has anyone done this before? even if its ordering some sort of original setup?
If anyone has their own brackets/components that they fabricate, im open to that too
Thanks For Reading,
Jeff

Yes yes I'm familiar, I was just hoping for an easier strategy (although clearly not that bad all things considered).
Still trying to figure out WTF anyone would do this, it's total nonsense!

Am I able to install a factory or MSD Distributor again without ripping the engine apart?
Unfortunately I don't have a photo, but I've yet to see a Ford with that style of shaft/distributor

Do you have any issues when its warm slow turning making some noise? It seems more like a vibration from the wheel turning when moving slow or turning the wheel while the car is stopped. I dont think its the pump. I have a serpentine belt so its tight. Im thinking its the rack. Its seem louder in the car than outside. When I had my son turn the wheel while I was outside it wasn't that loud like in the car. Thanks Steve69
Steve we're talking about non-power unisteer system.

For sure Bob, but we're in Canada just to be clear.
Also, this is a NON POWER RACK.
Bobe, the car came out of a 68 Mustang, so same car.
I just don't want to go from a soft sloppy factory ford system that leaks a touch to a system that sucks to drive with and is poor quality......does Unisteer make quality products?

This was one of my concernes.
These were this words:
"Since it's a manual rack I had no issues turning 275 wide tires while stopped. They are different gears in it to assist"
Seems far fetched to me, that's a wide tire.....now I recently bought that flat Shelby style wheel, can't rmbr if it's 14 or 15", what's stock 67 gt diameter? I know I went smaller than stick so it would be easier to get in and out of.
So Alan, Since you went 15", how is it, still unpleasant or not bad?

I have a solid lead on a used and perfectly working NON POWER Unisteer Rack and Pinion setup....
I am skeptical and nervous for 2 reasons:
Used and Non Power.....
Can any shed any light on the quality and my 2 concerns? It would be going on a 68 302 car.

I want to take a moment to thank everyone for their insight and time to help.....I applied multiple strategies like 10deg BTDC and the crank-turning with dizzy down pressure to drop it in.
In the end the Winner was the fricken timing order.....my mistake for not checking more references online (and I defaulted to the 69 351W I had for more years than my 68 302).
the correct FO was 1542...
Silly mistake, got it fired up, running and driving after 2 tries.

I also want to thank everyone for taking the time to respond and I would like to clarify I'm well aware the canister direction means nothing. I only tackled this cause it was ridiculous to face piston 5 and it hindered setting the timing.
My biggest mistake was not taking strong note on how the timing was set as it was ----- to answer questions the car ran and drove just fine, lacking spunk but it was smooth and drivable.

As far as timing goes it does not matter what way the distributor is facing (within clearance of the intake) as long as the orientation of the plug wires is correct.
Here's what I would do:
Bring #1 to TDC on the **compression** stroke, just put your finger in the plug hole and you'll feel the pressure as the piston comes up, look at the balancer and bring it over until it shows TDC or 0.
Now, here's where it gets tricky with an unknown motor. You could have a choice of firing orders, 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8 or 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8 (late 302 and 351w). Look here for good illustrations and
What firing order are you using right now? Probably best to try whatever the other is from what you're using.
As far as plugs go it will depend on what heads you have, what plugs came out of it?
This is important Info Thank you! I only knew about the 13726548 Firing Order, and I always understood it to be the early model Firing Order, but you're saying it's Late Model?
My current 68 302 is 1372.....and my previous 69 was 1372....both engines were overhauled and also out to that FO.......I guess the next question is, when did they switch over from what to which and if an engine is overhauled, is it up to choice which you do?

Hi Friends, it's been a while. working on a friend's 302 that is in a 68 coupe that he bought.
He and the worse off the previous owner know nothing about the engine, car and parts on it.
I notice his HEI dizzy had the vac advance facing piston 5 and decided to redo his timing for him so we are least know something.
I spent 4hrs checking everything X's 15 and in the end the best I could do was have the car "Run" but it has a vibration, like an imbalance.....it doesn't smoothen out with RPM and it backfires a lot! It violently dies if I advance 32nd of inch past a point.
I can't figure out how to time this HEI, any tips? Tried 3 methods to get at TDC end result is always the same, super challenging to get it to run, if it does it's not healthy)
ALSO, spark plugs, I can not find ANYWHERE if the Cleveland and Windsor use the same plug....I just want to know cause I have 2 sets from a buddies stock Cleveland that are essentially new.....are they the same?

Hi all, can 65, 66 or 67 Fog Light Harnesses be used on a 68? I obviously want to go factory with factory switches, just curious if I can use other years on it?

I didn't think it should friggin leak.....oddly enough the 69 I used to own with a 351W did the same thing pre-rebuild and after.
When I do the work Sally I always use an expanding high heat sealer on both surfaces of the gasket, can't figure out why builders don't!

Hi All, its been a minute.....Im in Canada and the old girl is in the stable for the winter, but when I went to just take a look at it, tinker a little I noticed on each side of the Distributor, those 2 cupping areas along the block and timing cover that each side was FULL of coolent!
It was freshly rebuilt 5-6yrs ago and runs like a dream. I noticed this later in the season after I changed the ALT to a Higher Output, but it was half this amount if not less.....I assumed perhaps I didnt tighten the bolts enough, so they cranked down another quarter turn....
now it hasnt started in over a month, not even cranked over but those 2 locations are FULL of coolent, how is it doesnt leak at all while driving it, and it does now.....Ive never had to top up coolent
ty,
Jeff

For starters I do not want a Single wire system so no need to retake the topic on that.
Secondly why I want/need a higher output is irrelevant, let's just assume I know what I'm doing and/or talking about.
I really, strongly, simply and humbly require insight on which High Output Alt brand to go with?
I read mixed reviews on all of them, Powermaster, Quality Power, Tuff Stuff. What is the collective here say about the best or very reliable or quality product/brand?
