FYI Ford, Classic Mustang Tech Discussion » anyone rebuilding Holley 1940/Motorcraft single barrel carb? for a 6cl » 3/09/2014 5:53 PM |
Well I got the head gasket on my 250 inline 6 replaced. In a 1969 T5 Mustang. But while I was at it I went ahead and attempted a rebuild on a single barrel motorcraft. Which turns out to be a Holley 1940. Anyway...I tried my best. Lol but looks like perhaps I am overlooking some step. I think maybe the floats and needle valve? Or something is causing the carb to overload and maybe overflow. All I know is its wrong. Lol but at least while it was running all the head work and rockers and exhaust sounded good. But was unable to test run it. Anyway.....I gave it my all. My first carb rebuild. Now Im looking for someone that rebuilds and is reasonable on price. Anyone know that guy? Let me know. Thanks

Thanks no problem its all good. And a good excuse to see the guts of this 250. Yeah a 5.0 would be great. But no money to spare at the moment. So im going with the 250 for now.

Sorry for the slow reply Steve. For now I just wired up the two speakers under the dash. Definitely sounds like a one speaker vintage radio. Lol good enough for now. I had to go and pull that head this weekend I was hoping it could wait longer. But on Friday with that warmer day we had....the motor didn't like that. And I also noticed this 250 sucks down oil...Lol. So I pulled the head off Saturday. Going to clean and rebuild the carb also. Clean up the engine a little replace the gasket etc. Btw how do I post pictures on here? Thanks.

Got the new bulbs in the dash. It works just like new when you use OE bulbs.. Hint....for those fighting leds...just toss them. Lol also got the radio working. And installed the new speedometer cable. Time to enjoy it for a while. Then move onto the body issues.

Hmmm so they are saying basically if they dont work one way flip them 180 degree. Sounds and might explain why I got them to eventually work. But the LEDs refused to work indicators lights. But thanks for looking into it. I might still go with the OE lights. And move on to the next thing.....the radio.
Still holding out on the head gasket at the moment. Lol ill get to it.

Thanks for the input guys. I did try the dimmer switch...and yes I agree with Steve Leds dont like to be dimmed. Yeah im just going to get the OE replacement bulbs. Plenty good for me. So far as the Speedo concerned Steve thanks for the advice on which one to get.
PS I love the Inline 6. In this car. I changed the oil. Checked the plugs..cleamed the carb and greased the steering knuckles which helped loads. Just a crap load of fun to drive! Lol

Ok, I was working on the T5 again this weekend got a lot done with it. The dash lights were not coming on. Unfortunately, it was not a fuse issue. So hopefully, I can explain what I seeing,
At first none of the lights worked behind the gauges. I took the dash off and pulled the gauge panel. Checked the electrical bus that supplies power to the gauges and it checked out as fine with 12V,
I then pulled and reset all the bulbs. In doing so I discovered that someone had installed those Blue LED lights along with leaving 3 of the standard bulbs in place. I think they had them just installed in any slot but as I said none worked. I pulled them and then reseated them and got one of the standard bulbs to work. I noticed that one of those was in the turn signal blinker slot. I then replaced it with one of the LEDs and it did not work. So I placed the two standard bulbs into the blinker slots and then set the other LEDS in place to discover my bright light indicator did not work in this sequence. I then pulled a couple LEDs and plugged back in the standard bulb into the bright light indicator slot. It came on. I then swapped it for one of the LEDs and got a no go again. I put back the standard bulb it worked. But failed after I put back in the other LEDs. Of which they all came on. Confusing huh! LOL Well in any case I have dash lights just no bright light indicator. But to be honest I like seeing the horse light up. I don’t mind using the standard bulbs can you get these bulbs still at the auto stores?
LOL What in the heck is going on?
Also, I broke that plastic piece that holds the Speedo in place. What a piece of junk that retainer ring is. It’s hard and dry after years of being on the car, once you squeeze it to pull it just breaks. No biggie I guess I have to replace that cable now. And get my bright light indicator going.
Thanks
FYI Ford, Classic Mustang Tech Discussion » location for rear seat belt » 2/17/2014 9:13 AM |
I'm all new to this Mustang thing and all. I just bought a 69 T5. It did not have rear seat buckles. I installed them this weekend. My car already had star wrench bolts installed into those backing plates as seen in your pictures. I used that location to install male side of the seat belt. But had to drill holes on the outer sides of the floor pans to fit the female side of the buckles. And I guess it's all about location, location, location where to install the outer belt. I will admit I did not know where the manufacture might have done it. But I chose a location that allowed the best fit of the belt as well as being able to get at the nut on the backside of the floor pan. I also had to consider the way the belt was going to be routing around the outside of the seat once it was installed again. I did not want it to be so far under the rear seat. The location I picked seemed to be a pretty good spot. The only real instructions that came with the belt was that it needed to be installed with a spacing no less than 15" and no more 25".
Anyway, I was able to haul the family to town on Sunday and they seemed comfortable and more importantly safe.
Thanks
FYI Ford, Classic Mustang Tech Discussion » 69 Mustang T5 With inline 6 gas pedal? » 2/12/2014 9:20 PM |
Ah man nothing but a thing Steve no love loss here. Its all good. We wouldn't have stories to tell if we didn't have a hiccup from time to time. But your most likely correct working that linkage from the carb side could cause that for sure. Lol thanks.

FYI Ford, Classic Mustang Tech Discussion » 69 Mustang T5 With inline 6 gas pedal? » 2/12/2014 9:03 PM |
Lol I should have taken a picture but had kids running around the car etc. I was just focusing on solving my problem. Lol ill get out there and snap one this weekend. And check on spring tension. But from what I saw in the dark. The tension spring I think was at the end of the throttle cable on the carb linkage. And it was good. It was the throttle cable pedal end that popped out of the retainer hole in the pedal. There was nothing really to key it into place some wire tie. Is in order for sure. But upgrade would be better. Lol thanks

Well its blowing water out from the front cylinder area which appears to be working its way back. Any green flowing out can't be good. But at least it got caught before its got bad. Lol I today I got the gasket and couple other gaskets to complete the job. All I need to know now is what is the torque specs for tightening the head down on this 250 motor? Thanks

Hi all still new to this car. Anyway took the kids out for dinner tonight we took the Coupe. After dinner jumped in the car went to pump a little gas with the pedal and it hit the floor. Lol I floundered around with the linkage on the carb for a few minutes then realized the issue was at the foot feet. Found that the cable popped out. Easy repair when you use your cell phone as a flashlight. Lol anyway dont want this to happen going down the road. Whats the upgrade 2.0 for this problem? Thanks.

Thanks MSteve The problem maybe my over thinking it. Lol thanks for the measurement information. I wasn't sure how much one way or the other was going to matter.! Its all good. Thanks again.
FYI Ford, Classic Mustang Tech Discussion » 250 inline 6 Head Gasket » 2/11/2014 9:53 PM |
Oh yeah to answer your question. ..is thier a choice in thickness? Not really....but thier is a distinct difference in the amount of crush between different gaskets based on what its made of and who the manufacturer is. Something like that from what I have read....according to the few 250 gasket products I have seen in the description of said gaskets. They clearly had it marked for its crushed thickness and that number differs between vendors.

Thanks 6sally6. To be honest I was hoping to not have to take the head in some where. Lol its still on the running car. So I guess I need to pull it and examine it.Perhaps if I can get someone around Dallas to check and mill it I would be a head. Thanks for the help.

Wanting to install a new head gasket on a 250 inline 6. Will the Felpro brand work as is?
A quick search on the web....and it appears that it will......but might be a little thicker than an old OE. One. So it might not crush down to the same thickness. Which I think is pretty important that it be the correct thickness. Anyway I am new on here....
Thanks

Hi Ford lovers..I am new to the forum. While not new to cars. I am new to Ford cars. I picked up a really nice 1969 Ford T5 this weekend. One in particular. ...The 69 you see at the top of this forum to be exact. Pretty neat to register log in and see your new ride already posted. Thanks Steve.
Lol. I have new plans for it. Nothing drastic...perhaps a V8 upgrade will be in order. A set of larger breaks adapters etc from MustangSteve....as well some of the other solid parts . Upgrades he has. Any way. Once, I make a few post I guess I can upload some pictures.
love the car....even better my two boys love it....and perhaps my wife will warm up to it after she gets behind the wheel and turns 18 again. Lol
