SORRY about all the confusion i created . It was a polished steel after market balancer not aluminum .e/bay  JUNK,  the woodruff key slot was not machined correctly which allowed the balancer to slip position and the engine to be out of balance. The end result was a new PRO Products balancer from Summit  50 oz  and a .975 spacer to align the zoops serpentine belt system . All of it on my 32 five window coupe . I know this is a MUSTANG web site but you guys have been around the block many times with FORDS . Thank you for allowing an 85 year old still learning guy like me to bounce ? from time to time .  FORD IN A FORD the only way to drive .

tried to start engine with standard ignition wiring . It would suddenly stop while cranking . The Harmonic balancer is aluminum . now at top dead center the timing marks on the balancer are way off . Could it have sheared the key and the balancer has slipped position ? I am going to pull the belt pully and investigate . are there different balancers for a standard engine vs an HO engine ?

Gave up on the cheapo mini starters . Bought a Power master . FOLLOW the instructions for the depth from the face of the ring gear ,must be 3/4 inch which leaves 1/16 clearance . works great .  Customer service very good and made in USA .   Quality parts are not cheap but no ore problems .

WELL : Put one shim in, just like it never happen. Starts every time . I used a NAPA part , would suggest just the Dorman one the Napa part not quite drilled mounting holes but it did go in.  First time or every thing. If you don't learn something new each day your on the way out . Texas is a long ways from the bay area ,besides our governor won't let us travel .  thanks again  there is no such thing as an electric hot rod . No oil no plastic .

Duh: you guys are right although for years i never had trouble installing a replacement starter , now it has happened . After research it dawned on me that the starter is in to deep . Dorman has spacers i  am getting a couple today  an will experiment with it . I saw the spacer looking at the MSD pdf about installation .  My ride is a replica 32 5 window and a lot o mixed parts .So far it wasn't a problem . Thank you for patience and help.   85 years old and still loving the car game .

Cobra kit car ? 302 engine ? Are there different block plates depending on the number of teeth on the flywheel or just a different starter that has to be used . Haven't bought a starter yet .

When you need help go to those who have been there and done it. Sometimes you may be to close to the forest to see the trees ! Well its running better than ever . even  though i have been working on cars since i was 15 and now going on 83 starting with a 50 flaat head and 2 Model a's you can still learn. Fortunately i was able to see number 1 rocker arms . and number 5 on the opposite side  with out pulling the covers. I didn't know that the timing marks showed up on the opposite side of the early small blocks . It was an HO engine . What i want you guys to know is how appreciative i was for all of the advice .

Stock 302 stealth Weiland  manifold 450 cfm Holly . Both new .I had 2 450 cfm Holly's on a Ford racing manifold which  was way two much fuel . It did run ok but since i had a 66 mustang with a electronic steel gear dist which ate the cam shaft up  i bought a rebuilt original dist.  I did check the cam gear and its all good. Before installing anything on the street rod i tried starting it and it back fired through the rear carburetor . I went ahead and put the dist and manifold in. i can barely get it to start when it does it is missing like crazy . popping up thru the carb. whistling out the carb . cranking  the engine with a vacuum gage on i have none . I closed off all vac lines.  I have suspicion  that as a rebuilt engine which i bought that the timing gears may have slipped .Perhaps the key wasn't installed on the crank gear ? The engine does not have 150 miles on it .I thought that it was 180 out but that didn't change anything. Thought it was an HO cam changed the dist wiring no difference . All opinions welcome .

I had the same problem . Changed the gasket twice bought an aluminum pan with copper washers put in a Moroso $34 gasket no luck . Finally found out that the filler tube was the culprit . doubled the o rings and atv . done  it didn't leak any more . The rest of the comments are right oil and water seek the lowest point and then drips. VERY FRUSTRATING .

Rebuilt stock dist Pertronix . stock coil which is hot to the touch. Should i put a resistor on the coil ?  I need some advice .

if you use a high  volume oil pump never rev  the engine when the oil is thick . You are inviting a disaster . The dist gear will strip the cam shaft gear eventually . been there especially when the dist gear is steel

A lot of different things can cause the lobes to wear off the cams or dish the lifters out. Right now the quick go to answer for cam manufacturers is improper break in with oil that does not have the correct additives. But yea chebbies have been eating cams for alot of years.

In the mid 70's I workers also ted the parts counter for the mechanics at a Chevy dealer. I sold a lot of cams!

You better believe it chevy cams suck then as the lifter s did also . Been there done it

I used POLY rocker nuts with allen set srews from Speedway . did not turn them 1/2 turn after the push rod stopped turning . Worked perfect no rocker noise engine idled right now no oil splash either . Do you guys know if some one makes a clear plastic distributor cap ? would have made it eaiser to go through 1-8 looking at the rotor as it moved with the remote starter
