After doing a search and some reading, I am going to pass on the 351. Swapping to a 5.0 sounds like a much better option then the 351. I would actually prefer to add a cam and heads to my existing 289. The 289 runs strong with no leaks or oil burning. I have run it on the track a few times with no problems. Is upgrading the top end of the 289 worth the effort?

I also may want to add aftermarket power steering for a quicker AutoX ratio..

I don't know the details of all the internal parts, but the other parts of the car build are really good. All brackets would be included, complete running motor, less the headers. The motor mounts probably wont be usable because the front end was changed when the shock towers where modified. It seams a little expensive and I was thinking upgrading to a 347 stroker would be easier.

A buddy of mine has a nicely built 351W in his Falcon which he wants to replace with a more tricked out motor for shows. I have driven the car and the motor runs strong and has a great cam. He will sell me the complete engine less the headers for $5,000. My current 289 runs strong but is just a C-code with bolt-on performance parts. I know I need special shorty headers to make the conversion, but is their anything else? Is this swap worth the cash?

I am running the 3.40 with my T5. Long first gear and I think I am turning 1,800 rpm at 60 mph. Basically works great on the freeway and very usable on the street. I think the 3.31 or 3.27  would give poor performance with the T5. My rear tires are sorta tall (225/50/16) so I am considering trying 3.55 for better launch and RPM coming out of corners.

thanks ! , as i got z spec  i think that i need to stay low from 3.00 to 3.27

T-5Z - 2.95 1.94 1.34 1.00 .625
T-5 - 3.35 1.94 1.29 1.00 .675
i think that 3.40 or 3.55 are still too close to 3.80  . using the calculator for gear there is little differnces between example 3.80 / 3.55 . become noticeable  between 3.80  and 3.08   . .
this is number spoken  that literally dont give me any feelings  . For this reason i will stay hear open for who had my same problem . Thanks !

With the T-5z you should be able to run lower gears.Mustang Steve has said 3.55 to 3.8 work well with a T-5z

This is my ride. I have a standard WC T5 with 3.40 gears and 25.8" rear tires. (215/55/16 front and 225/55/16 rear). I don't have the exact freeway cruising RPM's but I think I am around 1900 - 2100 @ 60 mph. I have a stock C code cam in my 289 so it is all used up at 4400 RPM. I have a long first gear and my 2nd and 3rd gear power band is good. I do open track with my car. This ratio matches my cam and T5 very well.

You should check out the Mike Maier system. It costs a little more, but is a really nice system. I just finished fine tuning my manual steering system, which includes the rollerized idler arm. It performs well on the street and the track.

Terry, Is this a museum or a Shelby collection which was in Chicago for a certain amount of time? My son attends DePaul University so I go to Chicago once or twice per year. I would love to see this collection.

I try to get out to our local tracks twice a year - Pacific raceways and The Ridge. I like having the goal of track performance as a target as I install parts or modify the car. Next project is to install Opentracker's roller idler arm kit and up the caster to 5 degrees.

Thanks for all the advice. I am going to resist the temptation to mess with my 289. "If it ain't broke don't fix it". I have other small projects in the suspension, braking and cooling to work on. She will be ready to roll at next years Ride-N-Drive event at Pacific raceways.

My question fits along this same vane. My 289 runs perfect.  It was a freshly rebuilt stock C code when I bought the car 10 years ago. I think the cam holds my current set-up back. I would like to upgrade to a custom ground cam which matches the existing components of my 66 289, but does not exceed them. I would do the cam swap with the motor in the car. Or should I leave the 289 alone and find a roller 5.0 and build a second engine. I can build the engine, it would be a really fun project, but I am limited on funds and time.

Hi Steve,
Will my KH disk brakes work with the larger pin spindles? Do I have to change my outer tie rod ends? I was reading some articles about axel failures on the stock 65/66 spindles so I was thinking about upgrading. I open track my car a couple times per year then street drive it the rest of the time.

Yes, the KH disc brakes will fit these spindles.  You will need to change wheel bearings to the A12 and A13 kits instead of A2 and A6 as currently used.  This will mate the rotors to the larger axle.

On tie rods, you have two choices if your car has manual steering.  1. Convert to Granada outer tie rods or 2. install a pair of my TRB-65GR tie rod adapters.

Ok, I checked out the tie-rod bushings. Do the ball joints also need bushings?

In regards to the tie rods; 1) Does using the Granada outer tie rods affect the steering geometry?, 2) Are your adapters like a shim which mates the smaller tie rod pin to the larger hole in the spindle? Can you post a picture of your adapter?

Two of my neighbors have bought new Mustangs in the last week. The red one is a 2015 and the blue one is older. I am sorta jealous, even though I have a nice 66 coup. I want a Boss 302 if I was buying new. Maybe when all the kids are out of college.
