Thanks guys, I really don't want to pull anything again till I have to but some info would be nice as I never did test fit the pilot onto the input shaft prior to the install

Happy Monday everybody, anyhow upon recent inspection of my 88 GT the trans numbers according to my friend that looked at them turned out to be 4cyl. trans numbers which surprises me because although I've only taken it to the track once I've been pretty hard on it aside from just powerbraking it bc I really don't have to and it's far from stock.
Anyhow my wonder is how the pilot bearing is able to hold up if it's possibly too big for the input shaft? I've replaced it twice with the v8 T5 one but not out of necessity. I haven't noticed any exceesive vibrations or wear marks either. I didn't know if this is normal or if possibly the input shaft could have been changed. I just drove it today, I noticed smooth shifts with no vibrations and I stomped on it a little harder out of a slight amount of disappointment. I've had the car for nearly 9 yrs now and have only had it in a shop to refresh the rear end and I know it has the same trans before and after this visit.
Thanks in advance my fellow Stangers!

The car does not have power steering or any other option for that matter unfortunately. Although I do want to purchase the MS pedal kit with brake booster capabilities along with the clutch cable kit.
The bellhousing provided with the trans for sale is from the v6 as well as the flywheel and clutch. The flywheel I'm guessing I can't use bc of the balance issue. so if I go this route what flywheel do I need? and will the v6 clutch kit work?
fyi I found the 03 t5 with flywheel, v6 bellhousing and clutch kit from a wrecked car for 300.00 and I have is a complete 4 cyl. trans that was mated to my 302.

Thanks,
I always thought scorpion rockers were a generic brand but they are made in the US and not cheap lol. I plan on using a stock 87 cam. I've got stud mount 1.6s on my 66 289 heads and the whole cost of reworking a set of heads for rockers is something I'd like to avoid. The heads I'm going to use are heavily ported E7 heads with bigger valves already installed as well as different springs and my thoughts were 1.7s would help take advantage of the heads wo too much trouble.

Hey guys I read somewhere that the 99-04 v6 t5 trans can be used in a 65 with a 302. All it mentioned was that the tailshaft or tailhousing had to be switched out with an older one bc of digital readout in later models. I'm wondering about the input shaft compatability with the 87 302 block? Also im looking for pedestal mount 1.72 rockers if anybody has a source. Thanks

Solid comments guys, I've decided on going with a stronger trans. I could not imagine not driving the car as hard as I drive my heavily modified 88 gt 5spd. I don't know the exact condition of my trans, the clutch was completely worn out on the car when I bought it so I was only able to shift into each gear w the engine off. I had to start it in gear w the clutch pushed in and turn the key on and off to load it on the trailer. I knew it was a gamble I just didn't expect to be a 4cyl. tranny.
How about the belt driven accessories? whats the easiest recommended route?
FYI Ford, Classic Mustang Tech Discussion » 65 t5 and efi conversion » 1/20/2016 1:07 PM |
Hey guyz im in the process of changing to efi 302 and t5 to a manual 65 6cyl 3 spd car and I've removed everything from an 87 donor car. I have already converted the car to everything necessary to support v8 components. I've got a disc brake kit that has from discs with rear drums that included a master cylinder, If I purchase the MS brake and clutch pedal kit for the t5 can the brake booster upgrade be easily installed using the master cyl. I have? Its a doudle hump with the retainer clip.
I have all the accessories from the 87 gt and accessories from the 65 6cyl. Im not installing anything but an alternator. what would be recommended considering either serpentine or v-belt for ease on the wallet and installation?
In what research I've done I know I need a front sump oil pan, another oil pickup tube, possibly a gas pedal from a 70 stang, and a trans cross member. lmk if anyone here has these items.
Also my donor car although from the surface looked like a low mileage completely unmolested car had a 4 cyl. trans installed, I would like to beef it up or trade it towards a good v8 one. Any thoughts?
Thanks guys, I've also got the 87 gutted gt if anybody needs parts

FYI Ford, Classic Mustang Tech Discussion » Qtr Window/ Qtr Panel Tear Repair » 12/17/2015 5:19 PM |
Hey Fellors!
This problematic area is the last area I need to repair as far as metal work is concerned and I have no idea how to go about it bc of the lead used from the factory. Does it all need to come out to start the repair?. The tear is level with the qtr window sill and horizontal from there for about 2 inches on both sides. On one side it spreads a little bit and looks as if it could be easily welded. Also in another post a reinforcement was mentioned, how do I go about reinforcing it?
Thanks in advance

I'm interested in the lid and corners, I'm in Knoxville, TN though. I know you would rather not send them but let me know if you still have them and would like to work something out, i'd imagine uhaul would have the packaging materials necessary to send them safely.

Good point on the steering wheel, I bought the wheel 10 yrs ago or better and only took it out of the box twice since then but it may be 15, I'll have to look. Nice car
FYI Ford, Classic Mustang Tech Discussion » Manual steering and 17in wheels? » 3/16/2015 11:39 AM |
Ride/Rife, Yeah I probably shouldn't take things so seriously lol. I googled it and was totally confused. On a side note I really think that more of these rides should be put on the ride height page. Love the car barnett, what rear-end and backspacing do those wheels have, I'd like the same wheels but with more of the deep dish look, my car is a 65 coupe. I hear ya about the dead nerve comment, I remember when I lowered my 88 gt about 2 in atw around (with lowering springs that were not cut) and installed new shocks and poly bushings I had a couple people riding in it and after a couple bumps one of them was like damn man I think you need new shocks, not being a car guy he was puzzled when I said it had brand new ones. After 2 years it really has settled in pretty nice and not so rough a ride now tho, I work out of town so it doesnt get driven as much as I would like to drive it.

I agree w the foose statement, a few of those overhaulin cars I'd been disappointed with if I was the owner besides the fact that the cars are done for free on that show. Personally I love the look of the older T/A style two-tone torque thrust looking wheels w the 15s and I dont feel like that will go out of style but I've got 15s on my 88 gt and I find myself wanting to see more rim in the fender, it makes it look further away from stock. As been stated its all about preference and what makes you happy just as long as you love cars in general eh. So what is rife? I also forgot that i read about the return to center problem, thanks for the input. I wish I had a 17in wheel to test it with.
FYI Ford, Classic Mustang Tech Discussion » Manual steering and 17in wheels? » 3/14/2015 7:14 PM |
Its good to know that there are positive experiences with the combo, I forgot to mention that since its a slow moving project it allows me to spend a little bit more in some areas and I've ordered roller perches from Daze, which I think I've read could assist in steering ease. So the Daze specs for arning drop alignment would be ok or should they be catered to the manual steering? It also will have all new ball joints and bushings so if all goes well maybe itll ride as good as any stock shelby of the comparable year and maybe better. +1 to great people with great replies

Thanks everybody, I searched the forum for ps upgrades and there is too much listed to just easily decide on devoting myself to a certain direction wo an extra grand or plans on modifications that are basically custom while my setup will generally work in theory to me. Last time I drove it the car had 13s that were tiny but I couldnt tell it was manual unless it was sitting still. I figured somebody would tell me I'm either crazy, a bodybuilder or looking to break something lol. If I can just service my steering box then that will be fine, Id rather concentrate on getting the car assembled if thats the cheaper/faster thing to do. Love the cars dodgestang, what type of backspacing and rear-end do you have installed on the green one? On the looks I like rims in the 15 to 18 sizes, bigger is better if it will not affect performance in a negative way. Newer cars have bigger rims to appeal to people more and new age restomods imo sort of mimic whats popular in the modern automotive industry but in a much more appealing way then modern cars. I'd imagine that w the 1in arning drop properly aligned there would be more rubber planted on the ground so at slower speeds espicially there may be more effort involved to steer. I saw the roller bearing idler arm but I have already purchased a new idler and dont know what percentage it would improve it for the cost?
FYI Ford, Classic Mustang Tech Discussion » Manual steering and 17in wheels? » 3/14/2015 10:20 AM |
First issue is the steering box is probably untouched seeing as the car was plain jane, no ps, it looks like the box may be leaking after being cleaned up a bit. It looks as if its just catching dust. It works great as far as being smooth in operation wo the tie rods attached lol. It does have some play but not too bad for its age, so how can it be topped off and how can I tighten it and how do I know if it just needs redone completely? Also I'm not beyond just redoing it but I really want 17s on the car and I'm a bit scared of the response I will get from this idea lol. So then what would be the simplest/cheapest way to improve the steering or go to ps?
FYI Ford, Classic Mustang Tech Discussion » 66 289 guide plates » 3/14/2015 8:16 AM |
Yeah I think I noticed the adjustable plates after I had ordered the stud and plate set. Mine were slightly twisted from the tightening of the bolts wo holding the plates in place. Out of the 16 there were 2 that I really didnt like, but no damage. I'd probably go with full adjustables next time.

I am readjusting my rollers and I intend on following the listed procedure on this site but my question is in general for one point, is the engine doing the same thing for each revolution or is it every other rev? Start with #1 cylinder, rotate the engine until the balancer reads TDC on the compression stroke (that is the next TDC rotation AFTER the intake valve opens) . I dont understand how you can have 2 TDCs for a cylinder. Is it refering to the fact that after compression it is still close to TDC? You start on the balancer in the guide, but that only works for #1? Right? So after that I am just looking for the either one of the valves to do the same as whats experienced with #1? My thoughts are on any one cylinder as soon as either valve begins to open the opposite (closed) valve can accurately be tightened. Please (anyone adding input) bear with me I'm trying to learn this accurately and thoroughly the first time. My cam is the crower stage 2 15511 so its not that aggressive.

FYI Ford, Classic Mustang Tech Discussion » 66 289 guide plates » 3/12/2015 3:39 PM |
The holes are perfectly round that the rods come through and if I remember correctly that is a deciding factor in whether or not the heads have premachined guide holes. They are already machined for them but the piece of mind is nice to know that it is right as it going to get without an expensive rail rocker setup for the heads.
