I run a SPAL 30102082. I find it hard to believe there's something it wouldn't keep cool. I've driven my car on days when it was 100 degrees and it ran 205 even in stop and go traffic. Regular copper/brass radiator and stock replacement style water pump with a 180 degree t-stat. I made an aluminum shroud for it that is only about 1.5" deep.
That fan has a thickness of 3.75. As long as it tapers down as you move to the outside edge then it should clear my tensioner.

When I ordered the AC from CAA and mentioned I had upgraded the radiator to the 24 inch radiator, then they suggested installing the 70 condenser. I figured I would have a better working AC so why not. Lol

I need to remove the cover from the belt tensioner to see how much more clearance I can gain. I might have to use a fan blade or look into a single electric fan. I should measure things for a mechanical fan too, it may not clear everything. lol

After my research, I too went with the Spectrum from NPD.

Yesterday I got both rear quarter windows torn down and rebuilt. Installed both and they are loosely adjusted. I did have the drivers side quarter window installed and had to remove it to rebuild it. Thought it would be ok and of course I could cut a corner and had to do it right. I also installed the passenger side door glass. I installed the self sticking felt in the door glass track. I had the felt that you glue it but wasn’t happy with it. The self adhesive stuff is much better. I didn’t take a picture of those parts.
No mustang work today. I had to clean and wash the trucks today, mow the lawn and some other house stuff I’ve been putting off.

I have 3” of clearance between the tensioner and the radiator and about 5.25” between the water pump pulley and the radiator. I think the tensioner s going to be a concern for clearance.
I never really thought about maybe upgrading something later. Knowing myself if I choose that approach it would never get upgraded. I’ll be to busy driving it. lol

TKOperformance, very valid points.
For me the project has drawn out for so long that some times I want to take an easy way out to get done faster. So post is also to help keep me focused. The mechanical fan was an easy option because it wouldn’t require much work.

20HP is something to think about. At this point what’s another $500 into the build. Lol
I wanted to measure the spacing I have but didn’t have time this morning. I rode my bicycle a little longer than normal this morning so I ran short on time.
Does electric fan setup move more air than a blade fan?

We get into this debate a lot, and I'm not looking to rehash it, but I see no reason not to run a quality electric fan. I've had one on my '67 for well over a decade with zero issues. The problems people claim with electric fans are the result of shoddy wiring and cheap fans. Every new car you buy has an electric fan. If they were so failure prone the OEMs would still be using mechanical fans. I run a SPAL fan with a controller I built.
My only view on it all is I like the simplicity of a mechanical fan and one less electrical thing to have to wire up and or worry about. I’m not the best at electrical wiring but can fumble my way through with the help of the internet and the forums.
Can those with the CVF measure the distance you have between the front of the water pump pulley to the radiator?

Rear axle doesn’t just move straight up and down, so be sure your travel verification process includes the axle in a drastic “leaning” condition with one side down and one side up. Thet is where I developed a rub condition on the inner wheel housing. BFH fixed it.
Good point MS. I’ll need to verify that as well as the front travel. With the room I have to tuck the 315 inboard, I shouldn’t hit anything. I’ll get pictures of the travel testing and post them for future reference.

Pretty sure when I bought the CVF setup I ordered it for an electric fan setup. Guess I’ll reach out to CVF today and see what I need to order. Now that I think about, I do have some sort of spacer of some kind in a box that was from CVF.

Nice result! Are you happy with it?
It's a bit hard to tell in the photos, but is there a slight gap between the vent window frame and the door? It looks similar to what I had when I fitted the reproductions on my car.
Also, what's the seal like around the vent window lock? Does the metal on each side of the glass spread apart when you open the lock?
The frames are just sitting in the doors. Nothing is adjusted yet.

I’m all for a standard blade if I can get one fit. My next step will be to see how to connect a standard fan blade to the CVF water pump/pulley setup.

Got the rear axle bolted in and rechecked for the back spacing I’ll need for the 17x11 rim. Looks like 6.5 BS will be a perfect fit. I may go with 6.75 BS just to give myself some extra room and if needed I could use a 1/4 spacer.
The fronts look like 4.5 will be good but the tire does hit the inner frame at full turn. It does so with either 4 or 4.5 BS. The rims I want don’t come with more than 3.5 for a 17x7. If I go to 17x8 then I can get the 4.5. I’ll look at this a few more times before I commit to a size. Just want to make sure I order right the first time.
Have you moved the axle thru its travel limits to see if it clears the wheel opening lips?
Not yet but I’m pretty sure it’ll be fine. The one picture makes it look closer than it is.

Looking at the 24” MS write up, it has this fan setup.
Just want to make sure it’s still the best option to go with before I buy it.

Finally got the vent windows put back together. It’s not a bad job but did take me some time since it was my first time rebuilding vent windows. I could knock a set out in no time now.
For the two rivets that hold the divider bar I decided to use 6/32 counter sink hardware. I counter sink the frames and I put a nice counter sink on the divider as well. The divider is a pretty hard material. The extra counter sink in the divider bar made it easier to bend or drive the material on the divider bar into the counter sink I made in the frame mounting holes. I think it turned out pretty good.

My last build, many years ago. I converted my 65 to the 66 gauges. I recall some of the engine wiring being different. Maybe it was just the alternator?
FYI Ford, Classic Mustang Tech Discussion » Rechrome vent windows or buy new? » 4/07/2024 6:03 PM |
I can’t find the rivits that hold the SS piece to the window frame. I also need to check on what the thickness is of the seal for the vent window glass. I forgot which thickness I ordered and never checked what I need. I could need both thicknesses since I picked up a window frame that I don’t know what year it came from. Even if I knew the year NPD states one needs to see what they have before ordering.
I did get the seals riveted to the SS piece and got the old parts all cleaned up. I think I’ll order new vertical pieces that press fit into the SS piece since they come with new seals.

I was able to pick up the vent window I needed. Took half the day to go get it but I can try to put the frames back together now.
REMEMBER!!! When posting a question about your Mustang or other Ford on this forum, BE SURE to tell us what it is, what year, engine, etc so we have enough information to go on. |
