Imagine how grumpy I am sitting here seeing on TV that the railroad strike has been averted and there was no reason for Amtrak to panic and cancel all those trains. The Federal Govt couldn’t afford to allow a railroad strike.

We had made the decision to attend this year’s Bash (thanks Josh), so I made hotel reservations and bought some Bash T-shirts. Because of the trouble I have been having with my back (I turned 75 a couple of days ago, happy birthday Glen), I knew that the 23 hour round trip in the Green Hornet was not an option. Since we nearly took Amtrak to Chicago for the Michigan Bash, we decided to take the Amtrak Texas Eagle from Fort Worth to St. Louis, rent a car and drive over to Vandalia. Until yesterday. Amtrak cancelled our train because of the impending freight rail strike. I checked Southwest and learned that we could get last minute tickets from DFW to St. Louis for only twice what the Amtrak tickets cost. Luckily I checked for rental cars before I bought the airplane tickets. There were no rental cars available in St. Louis! By then Cathie had already cancelled the dog’s boarding, so I admitted defeat and spent the next several hours breaking reservations and getting refunds. Total cost of our non-trip: zero dollars, but lots of aggrivation.

This is the second time in a month we have had a vacation cancelled out from under us. We had a Mississippi River cruise from Minneapolis to New Orleans, but Viking didn’t get their new boat ready in time and cancelled the first six weeks of cruises.

MS says the Bashes are about the cars and I love cars. But I agree more with Bullet Bob when he says that the Bashes are really about the people.  Cathie and I were both looking toward catching up with everyone. Maybe next year?

I have a building that size with a four post lift. With a sliding jack tray you can do just about everything you can think of. When I looked at the building on our pre-purchase inspection, the PO had a 64 Plymouth Belvedere on the lift and a 64 Plymouth Belvedere underneath it. I am 6ft and there is plenty of room underneath. Having said that I have been looking at putting a scissor lift in the 800 sq ft garage2 to work on the little cars (65-66 Mustangs).

I wil also admit to being a packrat and being reduced to little trails through the shop. Bigger is always better.

Unfortunately that design comes with a tight crossover which creates a hot spot. The solution is that brass hand operated air pump seen hanging on the door. After the engine is warm, both driver and passenger have to continuously pump the hand pumps to keep that hot spot from melting. Version 2.0 of those headers came with dual electric blowers cobbled up from heater blowers sourced from 1953 DeSotos.

Okay...checked out three different install videos and have yet to see anyone install the gasket to the body and then pull the cord to set the glass in the gasket.  Sorry...I know I'm dumb butt (TS&T) I'm willing to try to learn.

My mistake, I misread TKO’s post assuming the “install the gasket on the glass first” technique. Roping the gasket/windshield to the body works well and is the only way I have seen it done.

Here is another missed opportunity due to having to cancel the Bash. We could yank the windshield out of someone’s car and TKO could show us his “gasket on the body first” technique. Another learning opportunity missed. Darn you Wuhan!

Its hard to seal them without making a mess, so be ready for some cleanup.  I did mine almost 25 years ago by myself (including the fatback rear glass), and the trick I learned was to use a piece of weedwacker cord inside the channel for the glass.  Install the gasket to the body, then, with the cord inside the glass channel, use the cord to roll the gasket over the edge of the glass.  Worked like a charm, and no leaks.

Huh?  I'm having trouble trying to visualize how you managed to keep the cord in the window channel to pull it over the glass.  This process is just bass-akwards from how I have seen it done and done it myself four or five times on VW's and Mustangs.

Bob, view the Mustangs to Fear YouTube video, is shows all, even how to slap the windshield into place with the flat of your hand.

You might consider installing aftermarket headrests and installing speakers in the headrests, a left and a right in each one right behind the ears. Even 6Sally6 should be able to hear those speakers. Plus, they are stealthy. The speakers will be cheaper too, since they only have to throw sound about six inches.

NAWWWW it's a Rambler.

You have obviously never gone up against a Rambler Rebel with a 343 V-8 and 4 speed. Light car, good engine, lots of fun.

You might want to give Fluid Film a try. Sprays on, leaves a mostly waterproof coating. Supposedly removes light rust. The active ingredient is lanolin, so if you are allergic to lanolin like I am, you have to be careful how you use it.

I wonder if this will have a flow on effect to the actual part manufacturers such as Scott Drake?

I try to stay away from anything Scott Drake. His stuff has definitely gone down in quality from what he sold before. I use NPD almost exclusively and usually get good quality stuff from them.

Yeah, Scott Drake's stuff is pretty hit or miss anymore.  It used to be a quality name you could trust building first rate reproductions.  Now they trade on the reputation that name built while selling half decent products and half junk.  They've made inroads into the Fox era cars too, which is also disappointing.

In January 2016, the Huron Capital group purchased a majority stake in the Drake Group, essentially funding Scott Drake’s retirement. We can probably trace the decline in the Scott Drake products to that date.

That differential did not make as much noise as mine does.

I don’t have time to mess around getting madder and madder in order to log 500 miles. The old 3.70 is going back in.

If you bought a new Ford with a 9” rear in it and it howled and whined on the way home, would you be willing to “put some miles on it ... it will be fine “?

Yes.

I’m calling bulls$41+ on your answer, Hornman

You have the right to your opinion. I tend to have more patience than you do. My point was inquiring as to whether you had completed the recommended break in procedure, which you stated you did not. I would probably drive the car 50 miles a day for 10 days, change the oil and reassess. If the gear noise was excessive at that point then I would probably go nuclear on Strange and do my best to guilt them into replacing the gearset.

Couple questions:
1. Did you do the heat/cool cycles? They are important for honing the gears together and work hardening the surface of the gears. (Of course the initial setup has to be correct)
2. Do you have the 500 break in miles on it yet? If not you may be panicing prematurely. We all know that it is important to panic at exactly the correct time to get the maximum anxiety from the event.

The GPS speeds are usually more accurate than the average speedometer. Of course overpasses, bridges, and the hills of southeast Tennessee will block the GPS signals making the GPS speedos read nothing.

I know it’s frowned on, but I looked up the Strange differential break in procedure. The procedure I found on the Strange web site had the usual “drive 50 miles then allow the gears to cool completely, repeat 2-3 times. Then remove the rear COVER and clean out the housing. Reinstall the rear cover with a new gasket”.

Sounds like they sent MS the wrong break in procedure, or something.

My CURRIE rear end break in instructions were: drive normally for 15-20 minutes, then stop and let the rear end cool down for 30 minutes. Repeat 3-4 times. Change the oil at 500 miles.

The housing came from the factory with a strong magnet glued to the bottom of the housing.

I honestly wonder if its just a way to manipulate the markets.  Fortunes aren't made in a boom; they're made in a downturn by the people who foresaw (or caused) it.

If that's not conspiracy theorist enough for you, I also wonder if these viruses aren't the result of bio warfare programs run by the Japanese on the Chinese in WWII.

You aren’t a conspiracy theorist with those thoughts. If you were a real conspiracy theorist you would be saying the Chinese turned the corona virus loose on the world to make Trump look bad.

This flu season in the US 4800 people have died for a mortality rate of 0.05%.
So far world wide 2817 people have died of Corona virus for a mortality rate of 3.4%. That is why everyone is excited.

What's the mathematical formula used to establish those numbers?

4800 flu deaths in the US this flu season divided by 9.7 million cases of flu, times 100 to get percentage

2817 deaths from Corona virus divided by 84000 confirmed cases worldwide. (Numbers have changed since I wrote this a few hours ago). Multiply by 100 to get percentage.

I realize that this is advanced math, so you might want to get Mike to help you with it.
