After 13 times of installing and removing sending unit, gas tank, using 2 different sending units, trying BB’s gauge template, I guess need to try this next.
I’m no good at electrical ohms stuff! Let me know how it works Steve. I hadn’t driven the 65 in over a year.

Installing the A/C under the dash on 67-68 model is absolutely the worse for me. After 6 yrs. of putting if off, I finally found a quality mustang guy to install it for me. Biggest hurdle is now behind me. Cost a pretty penny but it is finally done!
FYI Ford, Classic Mustang Tech Discussion » AOD mods? » 11/12/2022 7:31 PM |
TKO, that 79’ truck did not come with AOD. It was before AOD’s time. I had it installed for better cruising and had a 3.50 gear. If I recall correctly it was a 88’ mustang gt AOD. I did have a peppy 351w in the truck but nothing crazy. I believe it dyno’d at 220 rear wheel HP.
I do have an late 80’s AOD on stand by ready to have rebuilt, that’s why I was asking about lock up converter and input shafts.
It sounds like I definitely need the lockup converter for cruising so, that means 2 piece shaft.

Thank you guys for all the good info. The car has a 95’. Stock 5.0. Which I’m not sure it’s tuned to optimum performance. It is carb’s with a 600 street Demon. It doesn’t run like a pre-93 5.0. But that’s another story.
Basically, my point is, it’s a stock eng. But I do want to have a good AOD, that won’t give me problems. I had an AOD in a 79’ F100 decades ago and I remember the planetary gears going out after one year. I just don’t want to go through that again.
BB, thanks for offering your tools, but I’m not a mechanic and Tranny’s are very intimidating to me. Still trying to figure out that fuel sending unit! Lol 😆

Can someone explain the difference in lock up and non-lock up? Wanting to get AOD in the 65’ for friendly hwy cruising. Eng. will not be more than 400hp. But I do want strong parts that will not fail. Spirited driving mostly. No racing. Rear gear will be 8” with 3.50 ratio.
I’m getting lost on the hardened one piece input shaft? Is there a 2 piece shaft? I also came across one that said it was hollow. Wouldn’t that be weaker?

Billy, Start gathering up For Sale ads to argue your vehicles value. If they give you a low ball offer like $11k show them the ads you find and argue the value it’s actually worth. More than likely you will need to deal with a supervisor or even Manager. These little property damage adjusters are usually young and just out of college. If they don’t give you what you feel your car is worth, you will need to ask for it to go to an appraisal. That will involve a more detailed review and more accurate comps of your cars value. The catch with doing a formal appraisal is, if it comes in lower than their original offer then your stuck with it. I believe given the type of car, there’s no way it can be lower than orig. offer. If they give you hell, get an atty. to handle the PD as well. See if he can fight for the value of your car. Remember, if the other party is at fault, then his PD limits should apply in this case. It’s not a matter of how much coverage you had on your car, it’s a matter of the other guy totaling your car. And that guy should have PD limits closer to the true value of your car, not just $11k offer they’re going to through at you.

FYI Ford, Classic Mustang Tech Discussion » I think my 3g alternator is fried? » 10/25/2020 8:38 AM |
Well, someone did the 3g conversion 5 yrs ago. Never had any problems. The plug in the picture came loose after I was trying to dry all the coolant. I believe that’s where the green and red was connected, but it may have been in the middle slot. I’m not sure? I will say the white wire slot was made a little bigger as to fit the red/green connector, that’s why I put it there instead of the black/yellow (middle)

While I was drying all the coolant, I knocked the one wire from alt. That plugs into a oem 3 prong female terminal. I connected the 1 wire to the white lead and when I touch the ground on the batt. I hear a noise, like current or something. Does anyone know where the 1 wire from alt. Goes to? I may have put it in the wrong slot.

So yesterday I discovered my heater core leaking. I ran a 20” heater hose to by-Pass the heater core and in the process, a little coolant fell into the alternator. Next thing I know I see smoke coming from the back of alternator. I disconnected the ground to battery and used compressed air to blow out any coolant from alternator. But every time I touched the ground to battery the smoke would continue from alternator.
I haven’t tried starting the car, because if I connect ground it will start smoking. So, what should I do?

FYI Ford, Classic Mustang Tech Discussion » Classic Mustang Muffler Survey, by MustangSteve » 10/23/2020 9:10 PM |
It really depends which Flows you have. I have 50 series Flowmasters on my GTO and they are very deep and throaty at idle and I have no drone on highway. When you get into 40 series, that’s when it gets a little confusing. I have 40 Deltas on the 65, I drove to FL, and it was a little loud at 65mph, but I was also doing 3000 rpm. (C4 Trans). The mufflers I got from John were intended for a louder application, which I still haven’t installed yet.

Thanks for the input fellas. I will see if I have an old standard shifter bezel laying around and see how that works out Bob.. I knew the console one is flatter than the plain shifter, but I didnt know you could put the plain bezel on the console shifter.
FYI Ford, Classic Mustang Tech Discussion » 65/66 Shifter » 10/02/2020 6:38 PM |
Hello all,
I may have a dumb question, but Im not familiar with the difference in shifters.
I have a 66 floor shifter with a busted up console on a non-running car. I have a 65 that I drove to Ft.Walton in 16' that has regular floor shifter.
Would it be a good idea to swap shifters for the 65, in the event I come across a console in the future? If I do swap them, is there a housing that I can use that has the PRNDL indicators or do I have to have the console to have the indicators?
Hope that makes sense.
