Never mind, just found your PM response, will go read it now.

Were you burning up the TFI or just overheating when they shut down?
Just overheating, Alan. It just quit running and then after 10 seconds or so, started back up and went down the road. I've been chasing harness problems but now I think it was the di-electric grease not letting the TFI heat dissipate into the dizzy body. Just why Ford when to the remote TFI. I'll probably remote the silly think, pretty easy, even though I never had a problem until I used the wrong grease, I believe. But, I do remember how you did yours, looked at it at the Bash.

Outstanding, Gary. We'll, RPM and I, and possibly RV6, will be coming through Pueble to pickup my passenger, then northish. We could hook up with you fairly easy. Sure hope you can make it.
I know about gremlins. The heap just plain shut off down in Texas last year, then did it a couple of weeks ago with an entirely different ignition in it. Research lead me to possible wrong use of di-electric grease for the TFI when Thermal grease is specified. Supposedly that will cause the issues I've had. Fixed it (I hope) today.

Next time, fer shore.

Or...you could do a 50/50, kinda get the best of both worlds. Use the new freshly chromed frame and the old (freshly polished by you) stainless window surround with OEM latch or the new latch handle on the old shaft.
It isn't all that difficult to disassemble the assembly and put it back together. You could even probably set the new glass in the old surround....done it, not that hard. 4/64 or 7/64 glazer's tape. Can't recall which but I'm pretty sure I still have some...just in case.

FYI Ford, Classic Mustang Tech Discussion » Reproduction vent window assemblies - My experience and some questions » 3/17/2024 6:52 PM |
I don't mean to be harsh, but I'm afraid these are QC issues that are part of the re-pop industry. Are those OEM vent surounds in re-pop main frames? If so it looks like the window suround may be twisted. If it's opening up when you close the latch, I'm afraid that's a low Q issue. I wasn't aware that the complete assembly was being offered. When I did mine they were offering the main frame only, I think. I went through a couple of sets of OEM assemblies and used the best parts with re-chromed main frames.
As for the gap at the door, the OEMs will have a slight gap, just looked at mine, but nothing like what you have. No gasket in that area. Sorry. This is a common issue with much of the re-pop stuff. Lots of fitment problems with aftermarket tin also. It's more effort but doing what it takes to use original parts can be worth the effort.

I bought a florescent orange paint pen at Wally-World. Slip a little piece of light weight cardboard under the needle to support it while painting it. That was 18 years ago and still looks good.
Also...I made overlays for the instruments by designing them in a "Presentation" software and reverse printing them on Avery self-stick label stock. Then gave them a light coat of artist's spray protector. Again...18 years ago.

Once again I am planning a road trip to see a museum. A couple of years ago we went to Junction City, KS and visited the Kansas Auto Racing Museum in Chapman, KS. We had a great turnout with 15 Mustangers and 12 classic Mustangs.
This one should be even better. I'm going to Lincoln, NE and spend a couple of days seeing the
Museum of American Speed (Speedway Museum) on Friday and Saturday, May 3 and 4. The museum is only open from Noon to 4:30 during the week and from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm on Saturdays. So I figured we could go Friday afternoon and again on Saturday morning, if anyone wanted to, and folks could get on the road Saturday afternoon if necessary.
My plan is to arrive Thursday afternoon, May 2, and hit the road on Sunday, May, 5 probably. I have made my reservations at the La Quinta, 4433 North 27th St., Lincoln, NE. Phone: (402) 476-2222.
Everyone I have talked to says this is an "A" list item for gear heads. They have over 600 engines, alone, on display plus every type of racing car there is.
We always have a good time at the MINI-Bashes and I've been thinking of this one for a couple of years. Figured I'd better get it done 'cause I ain't gettin' any younger.
MS's standard Mini-Bash rules apply: Drive a '75 or older car*, While we love 'em to death, the ladies are not invited (My lady thinks this is great since she gets her fill of Car BS the rest of the year).
* One exception to the vehicle rule: Fox Mustangs are allowed so Tim Carrick can drive the '83 Vert he got from Terry.
I sure hope you can work this into your schedule...I'd love to see all you guys.

Mike,
The "electronic" transmissions, like the 4R70W, are operated by hydraulic pressure butt (TS&T), they are "controlled" by a computer and solenoid valves. They have a pressure control valve that is electrically controlled to vary the line pressure. The control program in the electronic controller allows you to increase or decrease shift firmness as desired. You can also control the shift points, up or down, and lockup RPM. I have the Bauman "Quick 2" controller which does everything I need without getting too fancy. Ron 68 stepped up to the Quick 4 controller which allows him to dial in a whole bunch of other parameters...like seat firmness, tire pressure, headlight intensity, and glovebox door latch release pressure.

In nearly 40K miles, the AOD has only one problem. I did not get the...yes, it's really called this...Anti-clunk spring properly installed. So the center support in the case clunks...sometimes badlly.
Figured it out with the 4R70W and it silent. Some day, if I decide to part with the AOD, I'll open it up and fix that spring.

LIke TKO, I did my first auto-box (an AOD) in early the early 00"s and was amazed at the relative simplicity. Just keep in mind that cleanliness is WAY more important (in transmissions) than Godliness, follow the instructions, and they are pretty easy to rebuild. I even made my own clutch spring compressors and other tools which a couple of other guys on here have used.
Two years ago I rebuilt a 4R70W and stuffed in in the Heap to replace the AOD. Other issues convinced me to go back to the AOD but a month ago I re-swapped to the 4R with a Bauman controller and am very happy.
Will post a pic of my "stock" 66 shifter set up for the 4R70W if I can figure out how to make pix post again.

FYI Ford, Classic Mustang Tech Discussion » Faster wiper motor? » 12/26/2023 8:02 AM |
Sounds like a voltage issue. As Dan has suggested, check voltage with the motor disconnected, then check with the motor connected and operating. I suspect crappy/dirty/corroded connection (s) somewhere. Maybe at the firewall where cabin power comes in. You can run a hot jumper directly from the battery to the motor and see it works better, then you'll know if it's related to a poor connection.
FYI Ford, Classic Mustang Tech Discussion » Rechrome vent windows or buy new? » 12/18/2023 5:32 PM |
I completely disassembled my vent window assemblies and sent the frames out for re-chroming. Never have regretted that decision, Bob. I guess it's getting harder to find a chrome shop these days but if you can find a good one I think you'll be better off. I used New Age in Houston but that was in 2015. They did a nice job however, it seems that the plating scratches easily. Something to ask about, I guess. It does look way better than the "flash chrome" crap on most re-pop stuff. Good luck, as nice as your car looks from the pix you have posted, I'd think you want the chrome work as nice as you can get.
Also, if you are planning to keep the stainless bright work, I recommend you ding it out and polish it yourself. Took me about a week to do the parts for the Heap but, again, I'm not sorry I did it And, I learned a lot.
REMEMBER!!! When posting a question about your Mustang or other Ford on this forum, BE SURE to tell us what it is, what year, engine, etc so we have enough information to go on. |
