FYI Ford, Classic Mustang Tech Discussion » SSBC disc brakes dragging » 5/02/2024 5:13 PM |
bought a 67 cpe, 289, C4 a couple months ago. A previous owner installed the SSBC power disc conversion kit (A132-A).
The guy i bought it from hasn't used it much in the past 4 yrs.. Now I'm battling some front brake drag. The fluid was badly contaminated so i flushed it thoroughly with a pressure bleeder. It is now clear & bright at all 4 corners (factory drums still on the rear).
I've also removed both calipers, disassembled the piston (single) and used 600 & 1000 grit wet sand paper to clean up the cylinder and bore. I've done similar work to the slide pins. This past weekend, i disassembled the master cylinder and cleaned out the bore like I did with the calipers.
Even though I had a great 20 mile test drive on Sunday, the problem came back again today. I had to slow down to about 35mph to ease my way home this evening.
I checked the temperatures after I got home and the discs were both hot (300+ deg), but at least they were only about 10 degrees different so i don't think the calipers are hanging up otherwise one would probably have been much hotter than the other.
So... Before I just start replacing parts (calipers & master cylinder), is there anything else to look at? Could the power booster hang up somehow? The distribution block appears to be original. Rear drums are working fine.
As always, any input is welcome.
FYI Ford, Classic Mustang Tech Discussion » Borgeson Pump vs Ford (67 w/289 PS) » 4/11/2024 10:20 AM |
Too much assist from the factory pump might be an issue, but i'll see how it goes with the factory pump first. The planned use for this car is an easy 12 mile commute to & from work 3 or 4 times a week, so if i don't like how it feels, i'll opt for the saginaw pump set up.
Would a larger diameter pulley (under drive) on the factory pump be an option to reduce its output?

Bracket looks good to me. I think I'll do this in stages... I'm going to get the Borgeson "Upgrade" kit that uses the ford factory pump. Mine seems to be working properly (quiet and not leaking) so we'll see how it goes.
I'm still learning this car's quirks & personality. If the factory pump becomes an issue, I'll upgrade it later.

It's looking like the Saginaw pump may not be an option after all. The AC compressor sits directly above the PS pump and there doesn't appear to be enough room for it. Even if it can squeeze in the space in place of the factory unit, the top cap would be practically impossible to get to once installed.

What are the recommended mods for the borgeson mounting bracket?

I recently bought a 67 coupe with a 289/C4 that will see daily driver use for the next several months (except for really ugly weax days). Factory power steering, pwr brakes & A/C. Upgraded coil over front suspension (control freaks) and SSBC front discs.
The steering box is worn out and there are several leaks in the power steering system, so I'm going to replace the factory power steering set up with a borgeson set up. One kit option includes the pump and one does not... indicating that you can use the factory ford pump. Is there a significant functional, practical or performance differences between the pumps?
FYI Ford, Classic Mustang Tech Discussion » Control Freak Suspension?? » 3/02/2024 10:24 AM |
Any concerns with the strut rods NOT having any bushings in them? Without any give (i.e. rubber bushings), do these types of strut rods create a rough ride over bumps, etc.?
FYI Ford, Classic Mustang Tech Discussion » Control Freak Suspension?? » 3/01/2024 7:13 PM |
I've been without a classic mustang since 2020. I'm on the east coast now and looking at a nice 67 cpe (289, C4). The car has upgraded front suspension from Control Freak (upper & lower control arms, coilovers and strut rods).
Does anyone have any feedback, opinions or experience with that set up? I'll be using the car as a (mostly) daily driver with a winter/foul weather back up vehicle.
Thanks in advance
mike
FYI Ford, Classic Mustang Tech Discussion » Best method for adjusting valves (289)? » 2/13/2020 5:15 PM |
I've got a hint of valve ticking on my 289.
What's the preferred method to adjust the valves?
I'm not opposed to doing it with the engine running as i have an old pair of steel VC's that could be cut open to minimize the mess.

FYI Ford, Classic Mustang Tech Discussion » 67 Holiday project update » 1/01/2020 10:27 PM |
I sound deadener I used was Noico 80 mil... found it on Amazon. I seemed reasonably priced and was delivered quickly so my project kept moving along. I also added an insulated separator board between the trunk and rear seat.
The Noico stuff was easy to work with and not messy. Of course, since there was no sound deadener of any kind under the rear seat or behind the interior quarter panels before I installed it, the results are quite noticeable.
As for the other recommendations, thanks... I'll take a closer look at the doors, etc. this weekend.

I took my daily driver (67 cpe, 289) off the road just before Thanksgiving. She now has a T5 transmission, 3.25 posi diff, new leaf springs and new carpet. I also added sound deadener under the rear seats and behind the interior quarters. I've got about 35 miles of test drives on it all, and I believe the car is ready to return to regular service.
The insulation I added has definitely helped with interior noise. So much so, that now i'm acutely aware of how much wind noise there is in the car. The doors both got new weather stripping a few years ago, but clearly there's some gaps that need attention.
Does anyone have suggestions on how to best locate and eliminate as much of this as possible?

These are both 4" gauges.
Best of all is that the metal retaining ring for the factory lens can be gently massaged to make a nice tight fit around the body of the gauge, making it very easy to install. Also, the chrome trim on the autometer gauge fits perfectly inside the stock chrome trim.
You'll notice in the photo that i glued one of the smaller diameter "buttons" to the center of the Autometer lens as a tribute to the original gauges.

Yeah, it felt odd just before "popping"...
Just glad that it's an easy fix.

What is the measurement of the clutch pedal from the center of the pivot point to the bottom of the metal pad? I will compare the length to what we have on the shelf.
Clutch pedal is 13.25 inches

Glen: I'll measure it this evening and post my findings.
Rufus: The brake pedal is mounted in the upper position, but i'd be concerned about relocating it (if that's possible) as that might change the geometry of the brake push rod.
TKO: Assuming i end up using this pedal, i'm already lined up to have someone weld the quadrant on it for the MS clutch cable kit, so relocating the pedal pad is an option.
Bolted: Yup, i'll trim the brake pedal pad, but not until after i've determined that everything else will work.

In the photo, the brake pedal is where it sits with you foot off the brake.

Unfortunately it's not the pedal height so much as the length.
FYI Ford, Classic Mustang Tech Discussion » T-5 swap pedal issue » 11/18/2019 11:00 AM |
I've finally started the T-5 swap on my 67 Cpe (C4/289). Its a factory power brake car.
I've had a Scott Drake clutch pedal in a box for a few years now (c7zz-7519-a) but during a test fit, i found that it sits a good 3/4 inch lower than the brake pedal in the "foot off" position.
What's the deal? Do i modify this one, or look for a correct fit?

Those side bolsters on the seat might be an issue if your butt is on the wide side!
Fortunately, I'm still able to fit easily within the confines of an economy class seat on a commercial airliner... so the beam of my backside won't be an issue.
As for an opportunity to test the seats, I'm not sure if this guy will accommodate 20 miles worth, but I'll definitely test them on the road if possible before deciding what to do.

A guy on Craigslist has 69/70 seats with TMI foam (sport) & upholstery and wants to trade for my 67 stock seats.
YES / NO? Opinions?
