FYI Ford, Classic Mustang Tech Discussion » For those who are staying in Michigan through Sunday.... » 6/13/2019 1:27 PM |
My old boss, a WWI Vet, met his wife at a USO show. She worked at Willow Run as a "Rosie".
He was a flight engineer and was shot down on his first mission, spent time in the POW camp. The stories he told were amazing. Real Hogan's Heroes, Stalag 17 type stuff, with escapes, tunnels, secret radios, bribes, etc. Sadly, he passed away last year. Nicest man I have ever met.

"... and told Jean it didn't matter where it was going to be in '10...we were going!"
Really, you told her? I know what happens when I "tell" my wife something like that! LOL
Hope to meet all of you in Michigan! Safe travels to all.

Finally, the moon and stars have aligned...
It's going to be a long trip for me (50 miles or so) but I might make it. I'll start saving some money for gas!
FYI Ford, Classic Mustang Tech Discussion » Master Cylinder Shelf Life » 9/13/2018 1:59 PM |
I had a SSBC master cylinder (mounted but not filled) sitting around until I got the car closer to road ready after long restoration. Not in a climate controlled environment. Could not get it bled. Had a hot rod shop try to bleed with the same results so it wasn't something I did wrong. Turns out the seals went bad and I had to buy another one. Maybe it was defective from the beginning but I will never know. No problems with the replacement. Your results may vary!

Repairs made and back on the road. Lesson learned. Thanks for your assistance.
FYI Ford, Classic Mustang Tech Discussion » Electrical Meltdown » 8/30/2018 6:23 AM |
As you have surmised, my forensic investigation revealed a dead short in the hot cable running from the starter solenoid to the starter.
The cable was wedged between the transmission coolant lines and the englne right along the edge of the oil pan flange. Over time, the rather "sharp" edge of the oil pan must have cut through the wire insulation causing the short circuit and subsequent meltdown.
Though I am a hack when it comes to working on these cars, I have to give an assist to the transmission shop that did an R&R on the trans for tucking in that wire nice and tight.
Luckily, I didn't lose the car to a fire and that it didn't happen on the freeway or any number of worse places.
FYI Ford, Classic Mustang Tech Discussion » Electrical Meltdown » 8/28/2018 1:05 PM |
I did not hear any unusual noises, though my hearing isn't what it used to be and the car is kind of loud. I do know the sound of the starter engaging with the motor running and it sure didn't make that sound.
Would the heavy cable running to the starter and the battery ground being in close proximity (touching) allow an arc to jump through the wire insulation?
I still need to crawl under the car to see if I can determine where the short started but the wire is badly burned and I may not be able to tell. I also don't know if I will be able to determine if the insulation was worn off by contact by something to create the short due the bad condition of the wires.
By the way, this is not a stock 1965 starter. It is a PMGR starter.

Took my 65 FB out for a ride. Idled in the drive for a little while before heading out. I drove less than a mile and it died. No power to the key, the radio went off, etc.
Then I noticed the smoke coming from under the hood. Both the battery cables were smoking hot and melted. Luckily I was able to remove the negative cable and no fire or further damage ensued.
Lucky also that some good samaritans helped to push me out of harms way into a parking lot.
I recently installed a new radio and console but the new wiring under the dash was not harmed so far as I can see. The cable to the starter is fried. My guess is a direct short to the starter but I was a little rattled to look into it yet.
I plan on having the alternator and battery tested to make sure they are ok and of course replace the destroyed wiring. Any thoughts about how to determine what exactly went wrong so I don't relive this again? My first thought was that the radio install had a problem but I had driven with the new radio several times without incident. I added the console but there was no electrical involved.
Maybe this was brewing for a while but I was unaware. Thanks for reading and any advice.
FYI Ford, Classic Mustang Tech Discussion » Breaking Tires Older than 10 years old » 8/21/2018 12:49 PM |
Besides the date code, what are the signs that tires are too old or dry rotted?
Mine are about 8 years but appear to be in very good condition with no cracks or odd appearance, no discoloration, no leaks, etc. Car is stored in a garage full time except for shows or cruising.
Change them anyway?
FYI Ford, Classic Mustang Tech Discussion » 1965 mustang radio install » 8/06/2018 6:38 PM |
I am installing an aftermarket radio in my 65 FB with stock wiring. The new radio requires a constant 12v power source. What source under the dash is available for this (cig lighter?) or should I go to battery?
Thanks in advance!
FYI Ford, Classic Mustang Tech Discussion » Alternator warning light stays on » 5/01/2018 1:51 PM |
1965 with stock alternator and wiring, solid state regulator. Voltage gauge shows a steady +/- 14v
System was working when I put it to bed last fall. When I woke the beast yesterday, the light came on. If the battery is bad / weak, would the light come on?
As always, your help is appreciated.

They (CJPony) usually run a sale a couple times a year but for sure around the holidays. You might save 15% or more if you can wait for it.

FYI Ford, Classic Mustang Tech Discussion » Aiming Headlights » 7/25/2017 12:39 PM |
Does anyone have a simpler method to aiming headlights or is the instruction in the 65 shop manual the only / best way? Hard to find a flat surface with enough space to follow what the manual specifies.
FYI Ford, Classic Mustang Tech Discussion » What Insurance? » 7/13/2017 1:52 PM |
Well, the license plate is supposed to restrict my driving as stated, but I manage to find a car show pretty much any day of the week. So I get to drive it as much as I can. I even "commute" to work on occasion but the police don't seem to mind even with the historical plate. The good news is that the plate is good for 10 years!
I drove through Bakersfield back in May. It was hot as hell! Wouldn't want a steady diet of hot like that! LOL
FYI Ford, Classic Mustang Tech Discussion » What Insurance? » 7/13/2017 7:18 AM |
I have Hagerty. Stated value $30k but to get the lowest premium there are restrictions. Must be registered as a historic vehicle, limit driving to car shows, parades and repairs, no drivers under 25, and stored in a garage. Even with those limits I pay around $600 per year which is quite a lot more than other states due to Michigan's out of wack no fault insurance.

Ah, the unicorn mustang. Very rare indeed! Thankfully it is a limited production.
That purple velour would go well with this car.
FYI Ford, Classic Mustang Tech Discussion » Has anyone seen one of these?? » 6/06/2017 6:09 AM |
When I was about 9 or 10 years old, I got one of those as a Christmas gift from my aunt who worked at a Ford assembly plant. I had that thing for years and let my kids play with it. Sadly, it was broken and ended up in the trash. It wasn't quite like the RC cars of today. Could go straight or turn (if you manually turned the front wheels). The headlights and tail lights lit up if I remember right.

FYI Ford, Classic Mustang Tech Discussion » Speedometer ticks » 5/05/2017 10:46 AM |
This won't help much, but I have experienced an on/off issue with my speedometer. It seems every time the cable gets moved (for example I installed a back up light switch and moved the cable a little) the speedo would be erratic and then stop altogether. I have been told that the cable inside the sleeve is either too long or too short (can't remember which). I just drive at the speed of traffic or a speedo app on my phone so it is not that big a deal to me but I can appreciate your issue. It's a reproduction cable from NPD.

I will be driving out to CA with my son who's starting an internship with TESLA. Was thinking of going via RTE 66. Won't have a lot of time for side trips but I figured there should be some "not to miss" stops along the way. Any suggestions?
Starting in Detroit, MI and ending in Santa Clara, CA
Thanks

Everybody is different.
One of my sons showed no interest and was not mechanically inclined in the least. He does know how to jump start a car but that is about it. He is a tax accountant now.
My other son is very mechanically inclined and helps me on occasion. He works on his own car, brakes, installed a radio, etc. He is an computer engineering student, is on the formula SAE race team at school and has done an internship with Ford and will be working with Tesla this summer.
Everyone has to find their own niche and do what makes them successful. Very proud of both.
I myself am an accountant and I can take pretty much anything apart. I have trouble putting things back together though.
FYI Ford, Classic Mustang Tech Discussion » C4 Neutral Safety Switch 65 FB » 7/07/2016 6:54 AM |
Thanks, that diagram helps a lot! Now I have to get under the dash some how to disconnect and reconnect. I don't bend so well anymore.
I have read on line that you also have to "calibrate" the NSS by inserting a drill bit (or similar item) into some alignment holes on the switch. Anyone out there with experience on this part of the installation?
FYI Ford, Classic Mustang Tech Discussion » C4 Neutral Safety Switch 65 FB » 7/06/2016 1:25 PM |
Bought a C4 out of TCI. It came with a universal hot rod shift bracket with no provision for the switch. I have since had that trans rebuilt with the correct shaft assembly and I want to get the switch installed.
