FYI Ford, Classic Mustang Tech Discussion » Question on a 289 » 12/30/2016 11:14 AM

There are two kinds of camshaft thrust plates.  An old style and a new style.  One style does not have an "ear" that would cover that hole.  If this is the case leave it plugged.
The other style has an "ear" that covers that hole but there is a groove cut in the back of the camshaft plate from that ear towards the center of the plate for better oiling, blah blah.  If this is the case then that plug should be removed.  It just depends on what style of thrust plate your engine has.

Make sure the leak isn't actually coming from dipstick tube and making it look like pan is leaking.

All the interior paints you buy from various mustang vendors are lacquers.

FYI Ford, Classic Mustang Tech Discussion » lacquer interior paint problems or maybe just wanting too much » 6/04/2016 7:51 PM

Anybody have trouble with the interior lacquer paint?  It just seems to scratch super easy even after curing for a long time.  It is the accumatch brand that everyone sells.  As an example, the ash tray....I have painted it and stripped it back down twice.  It cured for a month and then I just rubbed the softest cloth across it and you can tell it shows very light scratches.  Worse thing is, my color is black.    Am I just expecting too much?

FYI Ford, Classic Mustang Tech Discussion » need suggestions for fixing passenger side window 1966 coupe » 4/07/2016 8:20 PM

I have tried adjusting about 1,000 times.  The widow rolls down easily and up easily.  My only problems is the front of the window lacks around a 1/4 inch making it up high enough.  The back of the window looks fine when door closed but you can tell the  front of the window is down.  The window hits the back stop first and then if you turn the handle kind of hard the front will go up where it is supposed to but,.,.. then it makes this binding noise until it comes down a little.  It has all new rollers and a new regulator.  If it weren't for the front problem it would be fine.  Any suggestions?  It does not have the fuzzies installed yet so it is not hitting them.

I know at one time somebody mentioned that you can put the calipers on upside down where the bleeder screws were on the bottom.  The air trapped stays at the top of the caliper.  This was on Granada calipers but it is worth a check.

I don't know if it is true but I thought I would give a heads up.  There are lots of people saying the same thing about no one will answer the phone or e-mails.  Just a voice mail that says what hours they are open.  Lots of people have been waiting weeks for shipment and have received nothing.  I was ready to buy a radiator and came across a thread regarding their problems.

Are there aluminum radiators that will accept a factory fan shroud?  It seems the brass ones have gone up in pricie quite a bit.

I have a 66 with a 302 and will install air conditioning in the future.  I was wondering if I should go with the standard fan shroud or the 3.5 inch one that is also available.  I know neither are probably great quality but if it were yours which one would you go with?

Door glass is stupid expensive.  Has anyone purchased some that is reasonably priced?  CJ is the lowest so far at around $185.00 per door

FYI Ford, Classic Mustang Tech Discussion » 1966 mustang been sitting awhile - electrical problem » 9/15/2015 2:46 PM

Thanks  gentleman.  I think the headlight switch ended up being okay but I put a new one in anyway.  I  finally found a bad ground near the drivers side headlight.  I had re-done the ground here earlier and it looked good but must have a broken wire somewhere.  I can't get continuity between the headlight plastic  plug and the ground on the firewall.  I have a feeling the headlight plug is corroded.  Will replace both headlight plugs. Dash lights are back on.

FYI Ford, Classic Mustang Tech Discussion » 1966 mustang been sitting awhile - electrical problem » 9/13/2015 6:38 PM

This car has been sitting for a few years while I work on it.  I put in a battery today and bumped the starter.  That part went fine but I pulled out the headlight switch, they came on for a second then heard a short behind the instrument panel and shut it off.  I pulled the instrument panel and couldn't find anything but now have no headlights and no instrument panel lights.  Probably headlight switch shorted out?

FYI Ford, Classic Mustang Tech Discussion » temp sending unit for edelbrock intake » 6/21/2015 5:17 PM

I have a 66 with a 302 in it.  It has an edelbrock intake on it.  I am trying to install the temp sending unit (old stock electrical one) but of course the threads are different.  It looks like the hole is a 1/2 inch npt thread but the sensor is slightly larger.  Does anyone know where to find an adapter fitting or if another brand of sensor will work?  I am just needing something to use for the stock electrical gauges.

FYI Ford, Classic Mustang Tech Discussion » engine finally aligned but now header clearance question » 4/27/2015 7:06 PM

Thanks so much guys for the ideas.  Having it milled was a genius idea but I am already close to the bellhousing/starter..  I tapped the shock tower slightly with BFH which was another idea given and it worked just fine.  I do have one more question - the header on the passenger side will be close to the underside of the car.  Has anyone had trouble installing transmission and then when raising the tail up for the transmission mount, have the header outlet hit the bottom of the car?  The drivers side seems to have more clearance.

FYI Ford, Classic Mustang Tech Discussion » engine finally aligned but now header clearance question » 4/26/2015 6:56 PM

Thanks for the replies on engine install/alignment.  Had to enlarge several holes to get all the bolts in.  I have tried like heck to get the engine over towards the driver side as much as possible but I still can not obtain header clearance on the passenger side.  I am trying to install tri-y's.  I can get the header in place by lifting the engine slightly but when I  tighten all the engine mount bolts back down, the header touches the shock tower.  I have enlongated the motor mount holes as much as I can and you can tell the motor is shoved to the drivers side as much as I can.  I can raise the motor a little but I will quickly run into hood clearance issues due to the edelbrock intake being taller,  I have "clearanced" the header with a hammer already.  Any suggestions at all besides shooting it?

FYI Ford, Classic Mustang Tech Discussion » motor mount/motor mount bracket alingment » 4/23/2015 6:46 PM

I have been trying to drop in a 302 in a car that was a 6 cylinder.  I have the correct v8 brackets that bolt to the frame but they are reproduction.  We tried to set the motor in but there is no way can get the motor mounts to align with the frame brackets.  I don't think loosening the motor mounts on the engine will even get us enough play to align it but have not tried that yet.  Any suggestions or has anyone else run into this?  It is on a 1966 coupe.

I have a pair of tri-y headers that have the oval ports.  They are mounted on 1970 302 heads which have a more rectangular shape on the exhaust ports.  I need new gaskets but am confused as to wether I should get oval port or square port gaskets.  Anybody know or have a type they suggest?  The old ones have no brand or numbers on them.

I was always told if it is an old gear set look at the coast side, if new look at the drive side.  That looks like an excellent pattern.

Thanks for the info.  I am currently rebuilding the rear end and changed over the brake lines, hose and relocated the bracket.  Glasers mustang  barn has a pre-bent line that will go from the long line from the front of the car and relocate it over to one side for exhaust clearance.  Made it a little easier.  There are two shops close by who do custom exhaust I will check with them.

I have a 66 coupe that will need an exhaust system soon, I hope.   It will be the dual seup which exits through the rear valence panel (like th GT).  Anybody have suggestions on a kit or should I go to a shop and have them make it?  Any suggestions as to mufflers - don't want loud but noticeable if standing behind the car.  Is that kind of understandable?
